A big component of Neighborhood Watch is knowing who your neighbors are, especially the ones that are next door to you, directly across the street, and your neighbors who live behind you. Knowing your neighbors can add an extra layer of safety to your street. Many of our neighbors are retired and home during the day, and can keep a look out for any unusual activity in the area. If you are out of town, telling a trusted neighbor to keep an extra watch on your house can give you some peace of mind while you are traveling. Many residents of our community live alone, and you may not see them often. No one wants to be the "Mrs. Kravitz" of the neighborhood and bother people every day you don't see them, but it is important to have some way of knowing whether or not everything is okay with them. One way to achieve this is to have some kind of "code" to let you know if they are okay. They can open blinds every morning and close them at night, put a flower in the window in the morning, or any number of things to let you know that everything is okay with them. Also keep your eyes open for anything that might tell you something isn't right. If your neighbor's trash cans are left out after trash day, or their car hasn't moved for several days, this might alert you to a possible problem. So now is the time - take a walk and get to know your neighbors! Learn their names, and exchange phone numbers with those who are willing. If they are willing, it's also helpful to have an emergency contact number in case of an emergency. Don't forget to wear your masks while you are out and about, and maybe soon when our COVID restrictions are just a distant memory, you can have a get-together to get to know them better! ~ Kathy Craven kcravenbod@yahoo.com 20 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2021 Neighborhood Watch
