40 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2021 | Yiddish Culture Club The Yiddish Culture Club continues to have Zoom meetings during the shutdown. We appreciate the members who have kept our club active during this time period. Hopefully, SLCC will soon be allowed to open and we can resume in-person meetings. We've kept it interesting for our Zoom attendees with entertaining film clips as well as just checking in with each other. There is no membership fee at this time, so come participate. In April, join us for the regular Zoom meeting on Wed., April 14, at 7 pm. If you are not on our email list, call Diane Stone or Diane Berley and have your name added and you'll receive the invite information. Also, please be sure to cast your ballot for three HOA Master Board members. It is very important that there be a quorum in all Districts, and even more important that you understand the details of a candidate's platform. In some prior years, one of our April events was to meet at the Main Clubhouse BBQ area and light candles to commemorate Yom Hashoah, also known as Holocaust Memorial Day. It begins at sundown Wed., April 7, and ends at nightfall on Thurs., April 8, 2021. In Israel, it is a state ceremony generally held in Warsaw Ghetto Square at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem. During the ceremony the national flag is lowered to half-mast; both the President and Prime Minister make speeches. Holocaust survivors light six torches symbolizing the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, and the Chief Rabbis recite prayers. During the daytime, ceremonies and services are held at schools, military bases, and by other public and community organizations. During the day and at evening, places of public entertainment are closed. Holocaust documentaries, low-key movies, and related talk shows are aired. At 10 am, air-raid sirens sound off throughout the country and Israelis observe two minutes of solemn reflection. Almost everyone stops what he or she is doing, including motorists, who stop their cars in the middle of the road and stand beside their vehicles in silence as the siren sounds off. Please notify Marilyn Forhane, YCC's Sunshine Board Member at (951) 845-9455 if you know members who should receive a greeting or card from YCC for birthdays, anniversaries, or for a loved one who has passed. Program ideas: Contact VP-Diane Stone at (951) 769-0130 or swmbo3@gmail.com. Also, please contact her if you wish to obtain something from our video library. Membership Updates: VP-Diane Berley at (818) 943-6457 or berley52@aol.com. The Yiddish Culture Club welcomes all residents of any denomination
