We have a question for you: How much do you really know about Sun Lakes? Most new homeowners today, like those from 10 or 15 years ago, do not know a great deal about the lifestyle or situation they are moving into. Did you know you were going to be part owner of a "small town" corporation? Did you know about the rules and regulations that control a lot of your actions? Did you know about CC&Rs? None of this really occurred to you — all you knew was that you were moving into a new home, maybe for the rest of your life. You did go through an orientation but perhaps that did not make much of an impression on you. It all came crashing down when you received a warning about parking your car on the street or in your driveway at night, or when you started to make changes in your front lawn, and were told, "you can't do that without approval." There are two reactions to these situations — wondering what you got into, finding the rules and regulations and familiarize yourself with them or, "no one is going to tell me what to do in my own home" and fight them. When you bought into Sun Lakes, you bought into a new lifestyle and handed over your financial interest to a Board of Directors. You assumed a new way of life with rules and regulations. You were asked to become familiar with the CC&Rs and the Architectural Rules. Most of us ignored the suggestion and paid the price later. Sun Lakes is one of the most financially successful Homeowners Association in the country. By the measure of many, it is also one of the most beautiful and well-managed corporations. This did not happen by chance but by hard work and dedication by a number of Boards of Directors. We have been blessed by electing Board Members with common sense and good judgment. Here is our lesson for the week — get a copy of the CC&Rs and read the important parts that refer to our actions and interests. Even more important, read the information in the telephone book. It contains the General Statement of Rules and Regulation and beginning on page 61, The Architectural Standards and Guidelines. With our activities being controlled, this project will be worthwhile and give you an insight into the obligations you inherited when you moved to Sun Lakes. DISTRICT DELEGATE ASSEMBLY REPORT | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2021 | 9 By Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly District 9 Welcome Committee Chairperson Nancy Watterson (L) and District 9 Delegate Sue Howie (R) present goodie basket to new residents Fred Papouban and Sandra Dailey (center couple) The District 9 Welcome Committee prepared and delivered goodie-filled baskets to 12 families who moved into Sun Lakes during the pandemic. Each beribboned basket contained homemade items donated by residents, including jam from Two Guys in a Jam, almond toffee from Judy Sorbo, a knitted hat from Linda Vieira, button earrings from Helen Kostluk, Mary Kay products from Annie Wilson, and Avon samples from Barbara Ball. Also in each basket was a current issue of Lifestyles, a "Dine with District 9" cookbook, a few disposable masks, a lanyard for a Sun Lakes ID, and a "Welcome to the 'Hood" packet of resource information. "We hope this will be a regular district tradition to welcome new residents of our District," said Welcome Committee Chairperson Nancy Watterson. "It's extra special since these families haven't had a chance yet to really enjoy all that Sun Lakes has to offer," added District Delegate and basket creator Sue Howie. WELCOME TO DISTRICT 9!
