| THE COLONY NEWS | MAY 2021 | 13 COMMITTEE NEWS By Jane Payne LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS: This committee still has openings for two new volunteers. We would love to have new homeowners as well as longer-time members. To join the LAC, we ask that you be willing to learn, get involved and be an active member. You need to be able to: • Devote several hours a month to the LAC. Our meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 9 am in the Annex or via Zoom and generally last two to three hours. We also have various subgroups which come and go, depending on need, and meet in addition to the monthly meeting. • Spend time outside walking and evaluating the landscape. Each LAC member is assigned to an area within The Colony to walk with staff to evaluate for any changes and monitor throughout the year. In addition, you are expected to participate in group area walks on different topics and individual walks to report any plant or tree issue. Please consider if joining the LAC would be a good fit for you. If you are interested, please contact our Vice Chair, Karl Gerlach at kgerlach29@yahoo.com. SPRING IS HERE: I hope everyone is enjoying the spring blooms. Our goal is to have something blooming all year. The challenge is that many of the spring blooming plants are also frost sensitive, and some lose their leaves in the winter. That forces us to have a mix of evergreen and flowering plants and trees. We were fortunate to have had a mild winter. The blooms started in winter with the blue hibiscus and plumbagos along Avenita Florita. The pear trees with the white blooms were spectacular on Corte Calanova. The redbud trees are starting to show their beautiful pink and purple blooms and are especially beautiful on Corte Lorca. The coral aloes with their orange blooms are spread around the Colony, and the orange sticks-on-fire at the front gate are vibrant. The orange cape honeysuckle and orange and mixed-color gazanias are putting on a spectacular show on the slopes. Included are some photos for your enjoyment. INFORMATION FOR NEW RESIDENTS: I would like to share with you important information about irrigation emergencies. With permission from Jan Foster, I'm reprinting her article from November 2019: TO REPORT LANDSCAPE EMERGENCIES: Emergency calls are for major situations, such as a broken water line or sprinklers remaining on for an extended period of time (over 30 minutes), where water is running continuously, but not for a single broken sprinkler head which will turn off automatically. To report an emergency during normal office hours, homeowners should call the HOA Office at 951-677-4341 and follow the prompts. An on-call staff member will respond immediately. After hours and weekends, call the Main Gate at 951-677-0238. Security will notify the on-call contractor. Don't panic if you get the Gate's answering machine. They will usually have picked up the message and acted on it within minutes of your call. It may take the contractor up to 30 minutes to fix the situation. LANDSCAPE & TREE CONCERNS: For all landscape and/or tree issues, questions, or problems, call The Colony Landscape line at 951-698-0731. For after hours and weekend irrigation emergencies only, call the Main Gate at 951-677-0238. LANDSCAPE ADVISORY Coral Aloe Blue Hisbiscus Gazania Redbud Trees
