28 | THE COLONY NEWS | MAY 2021 | CLUB NEWS By Kathy Lewis, 412-0006 Would you like to socialize more in a safe environment? Would you like to increase your fitness level? How about meeting some new Colony residents? Come and join the fun sport of pickleball, where you will do all of these and more! Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world and you can learn the basics of the game right here at The Colony. Beginner lessons are available mornings, afternoons and evenings. Please call me to schedule a lesson and join in the fun today! Pickleball By Linda Hardtke Kight, 319-0071 We finally have some different news to report this month – we were able to hold a paddle ball tournament on March 26! We were pleasantly surprised at the number of people who signed up and how enthusiastic everyone was to get back to a semblance of normalcy. Twenty people participated, with many others watching from the sidelines. Darla Gonzales won the women's division and Brent DeWitt was the men's winner. Congratulations to you both! Some breakfast-type snacks were provided, and Joey Santiago made delicious Cuban sandwiches for all to enjoy. Our next paddle ball tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 14. As the weather has become a little warmer and many people have received their vaccinations, racquet sports have experienced an upswing in the number of people using the courts. Pickleball continues to grow, paddle ball is holding steady, and the tennis courts are in use more frequently. We always welcome new participants, so please consider trying one of these sports. We will be holding elections for our new Board during the week of April 19-23, and Scott Ross has volunteered to be in charge of the ballots. You can find him outside the paddle/ pickle ball courts in the mornings during that week. Have a wonderful Mother's Day (thanks, moms!) and a grateful Memorial Day as we remember and honor those who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Be safe – and I hope to see you on the courts! Racquet Club Kennel Club By Ginny Ritchie, for the Kennel Club Steering Committee The Kennel Club is continually amazed at the number of new dogs in our community. We are looking forward to a few activities this fall and a full slate of scheduling for 2022. Thank you to all our members for your patience. Tom Brackin wrote a great article in the April Colony News and we, as Kennel Club members, need to heed his words. We need dog-friendly people on the Board to help our community provide a more dog-supportive environment. Think about running in the next election if you are so inclined. Recently, we were made aware of an off-leash dog attacking another dog in one of our neighborhoods. Fortunately, the owner of the loose dog came forward and has assumed responsibility for the attack. Our suggestion is that Colony dogs wear a secure harness when walking. Large or small, the dogs feel more secure and they don't get away, allowing owners more control. We are planning an annual group portrait of all Colony dogs and owners for early fall. The location and time will be announced at a later date. Also, our Patriotic Pups Parade may become a Halloween Costume Cart parade. This will be announced at a later date as well. Walk on… dog lovers never walk alone!
