Anthony Bourdain May is the month that is most famous for the celebration of May Day. As children we can probably remember our grandparents and parents helping us to make delightful little May baskets decorated with flowers and small treats. The custom was to knock on the door and yell, "May basket!" If the recipient caught you, he or she was entitled to a kiss. Even Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream celebrates this tradition in the final scene on the eve of May Day, a night when spirits are mischievous, and love is in the air. Speaking of literature, Susan Meissner's newest novel, The Nature of Fragile Things has excellent reviews. Set in 1906, Shophie Whalen, a young Irish immigrant longs to leave New York and answers a mail-order bride ad. She marries Martin Hocking, but Martin's odd behavior leaves her with the uneasy feeling that something is not quite right. The fate of three women, intertwined on the eve of the tragic San Francisco Earthquake, will test their resiliency and resolve and their belief that love can overcome fear. This book is on the April reading list and has received five-star ratings from its readers. Recently all library members received flyers encouraging them to renew their 2021 membership. We are happy that 70 renewals resulted. Currently, however, over 100 members have not taken the opportunity to renew. You can pay your dues by dropping off your check for $ 15 to Ellen Kippel at 4904 Tilos Way (760) 305-7114 or cell (714) 893-7621. We appreciate your continual support. We are looking forward to the library opening on a limited basis soon. At that time, those who wish to browse our open shelves can pick out books to take home. These books can be returned to the cart that will be outside of the library. According to OHCC guidelines, you will need to make an appointment to visit the library and limited numbers will be allowed to browse. You can make a reservation by going to the OHCC Website. Make sure you read the most current news from the OHCC regarding reopening plans for inside club activities. A special thank you to Gail Wells for being so generous with her time and efforts by helping us to keep our books moving on to their next homes and for handling our overflow in donations. At this point, WE ARE NOT ABLE TO TAKE ANY MORE DONATIONS. Make sure your May basket is filled with great books from our library. ~ Sally Benton Library Association MAY BOOK BUYS The Community Image and Marketing Committee The Community Image and Marketing Committee and the Landscape Committee are finishing up the recommendations for the reinvention of the front entry of our community. The front entry is the gateway to OHCC which tells the story to residents, guests, and potential buyers. It is essential that the first impressions of our community be one that establishes our visual identity and reflects our resort lifestyle. Our recommendation will include a new monument that will reflect our brand identity and landscape that mirrors our Clubhouse California Resort style. Our guideline has been to achieve "Understated Elegance," pride in ownership, and increased property values. The Committee continues to be a source for the Master Board to help them ensure consistency of OHCC's brand identity. Our fellow homeowners help us in this quest. With the help from management, the city, and your suggestions we will roll up our sleeves. The committee welcomes all residents' observations and comments. The members of the committee are Tom Murphy (Chair) twmmurphy@ gmail.com, Jeff Mowers (Vice-Chair), Judy Caston, Christy Cooper, Christine Ross, Marcy Samoiloff and Nancy Trimino.
