26 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2021 | Woodchucks The Woodchuck nation invites you to enjoy a creative challenge in your own well-equipped shop. Step through our doors and be amazed! You can cut your wood either cross-grain or with the grain. You will also enjoy three sizes of band saws, skill saws, and jig saws, both portable and fixed. Two scroll saws will help you make a puzzle. You are able to plane your boards by hand or machine, and a large jointer awaits your boards. Drill presses, both large and small, will keep your holes straight. Six machine-sanders and two hand-sanders will make your project worthy. Hand tools, air guns, benches, clamps, drill bits, sand papers, vacuums, and a compressor await our Chuckers. Those residents who were members in 2020 will have their dues waived for 2021. We are planning to have the annual safety film and shop orientation online. Stay tuned! New members can join for just $10 per year. To use the woodshop, members must annually view our online safety video and shop orientation and then sign waivers. You too can make sawdust! Art Lovers It was a beautiful spring day at the San Diego Botanic Gardens where our members had their first trip of the year on March 24. So many flowers and trees were in bloom and the vistas were glorious. We were able to view many of the sculptures that were nestled among the exotic plantings including our own Ernie Pick's (center) and our recent Zoom presenter, Scott Bruckner's. We enjoyed the knowledgeable comments from our tram driver as she pointed out the many unusual living specimens. The San Diego Botanic Garden is a wondrous gem for residents and visitors who can view plants from all over the world. Several of us had lunch at a nearby restaurant, the first restaurant visit for some of us in a year. It was quite a day! April saw us venturing up north to Fallbrook Art Center's 12th Annual Signature American Watermedia International Exhibition featuring 120 works by renowned watermedia artists from around the world. A guided visit to the Veterans' Art Project's Foundry at 300 E. Alvarado followed. It is a short walk from Fallbrook Art Center. Some of these bronze castings of heads and hands were featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in 2017. VetArt utilizes the multi- stage process of bronze casting to teach art-making skills, and create opportunities for sharing and storytelling. The results provide a powerful tool for educating the broader community about veterans' issues through the dignified presentation of completed artwork. VETART.org is a community-based arts organization serving veterans, spouses, dependents, and their caregivers through deep arts engagement and art therapy, helping veterans and active duty members find their voices while transitioning from military to civilian life.
