FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2021 53 I thought that the sequence of events that I experienced over the past week might be of some value to those who are burned out from COVID sedentarism, and can't wait to dive head-first into their favorite activity. When it was announced that The Courts Main Room will finally reopen for ping pong, my heart immediately raced to 80 beats-per- minute, and the thoughts of returning to some semblance of actually moving my joints was hard to describe. Nary a thought entered my mind that, due to social distancing restrictions, only ping pong singles play was allowed, which entails twice the amount of effort, energy, and movement than doubles. Who cares ? When I entered The Courts Main Room on that first day, it was "game on," "all hands on deck," or as Frank Costanza would say, "I'm back, baby!" So I jumped in with both feet: diving, jumping, slamming and spinning, screaming at myself for bad shots… like I never left. Except after about an hour of play that turned out to be more driven by adrenaline then sensibility, I came away extremely winded and in some unusual pain around my chest area. Then it all went away and I thought nothing about it, until about three days later, when I was awakened at 1 am with a similar sensation after a day of rigorous activity. I walked briskly to the living room and grabbed the blood pressure machine, thoughts swirling in my head about those scenes in Grey's Anatomy where four ER nurses are sprinting down the hall with a gurney with yours truly strapped in. No way that could possibly be me! Well, a subsequent doctor's visit yielded negative tests on all those symptoms that freaked me out, but let's just say that there was a lesson well learned about the natural response to ignore a year of dormancy and rush feet-first into those cardio-inducing activities you enjoy, without restraint. At the end of the day, be sure to let your 25-year-old brain catch up with your real status as an out-of-shape senior citizen. Take your time, breathe deep, and ease in… it will be worth it. Stay safe. ~ Bob Rubenstein, brube88@gmail.com Ping Pong We have had a change in our steering committee this year. Our long time chairperson, Nancy Barnaby, has stepped down after five years as chairperson. We are thankful for Nancy and all she has done for our Pickleball group. Our new chairperson is Jesse Aceves. Jesse and his wife moved to Four Seasons Beaumont from Moreno Valley. Jesse was the Lead Technologist in the CT Department at Kaiser. Jesse became interested in Pickleball about a year after living here at Four Seasons Beaumont. He comes from a racquetball background so his wife, Margie, felt it would be a great sport for him. His wife was instrumental in getting him onto the Pickleball courts by literally taking him by the hand and saying to the players on the court, "excuse me, this is my husband Jesse and he wants to know if he can play with you guys." He has been hooked ever since. We are sure Jesse will be an asset to our Pickleball group. Kelly and Shelly played Women's Doubles 3.0 at the 2021 San Bernardino Tournament, winning the Bronze on April 10. Way to go girls! We are proud of all our players who took part in this community tournament that has the USAPA rating. Come join players on the courts for the fun game of Pickleball! Hours are listed on the Pickleball courts. Play on players! ~ Yundell Montalbo- Linton, Yundell@aol.com Pickleball Shelly Allard and Kelly Vucinic (aka The Dynamic Duo) were the Bronze winners in Women's 3.0 doubles Jesse Aceves is our new Pickleball chairperson
