62 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2021 | Friends we will miss Joyce Ann Henry Hermann, 88, passed away on March 24 in her home with her husband of 69 years by her side. Joyce succumbed after 10 years of fighting Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by three children and eight grandchildren. Joyce met Dan on summer vacation in 1951 in Michigan. It was love at first sight and they were married in March of 1952. She moved with her husband and two young sons for Dan's Air Force three-year tour of duty in France where their daughter was born. The three years in France lit the travel bug for both Joyce and Dan and they went on 25 cruises after retiring. She was an accomplished Real Estate Agent in Maryland, where Dan was stationed at Andrews AFB. Living for 19 years in Rancho Mirage at Mission Hills CC and 13 years here at Sun Lakes, she became a low-handicap golfer. At Mission Hills, she qualified for a place on their traveling team in the Coachella Valley women's golf league. As an aside, she once played a round of golf with Dinah Shore at the Dinah Shore tournament course. When she wasn't golfing, she relaxed by playing contract bridge and made the Mission Hills traveling bridge team. A celebration of life will take place on Memorial Day weekend at her son's home in Arcadia, Ca. Karen Jean Hoferer, born May 31, 1946, was called home to be with her Lord on January 12, 2021 after a bravely-fought, year-long battle with esophageal cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, Patrick Hoferer, siblings Doreen Bryant, Lorraine and Ron Davis, Larry Cameron, and Gary Cameron, children Patti and Dale Johnson, Susie Joachim, James Hoferer, and Amber Boughner, 11 grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Karen grew up in Norwalk, CA, graduating from Excelsior High School and attending Cerritos College. In high school, she met her first husband, Michael Joachim. They were married in 1964 and settled in Downey to raise their two daughters. After a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, Michael required a great deal of care, which Karen selflessly provided while working full-time and managing the household. Michael passed away in 1990. Karen's generous spirit and accounting skills came together when she gave her time to count and record the weekly offering at Downey First Christian Church. Additionally, she volunteered at the church food pantry, hosted Bible studies in her home, and supported many other church activities. The time she spent at DFCC not only deepened her faith but also led her to the second love of her life. At a church-sponsored blood drive, Pat spotted Karen donating blood and soon their friendship became a romance. After courting like teenagers, Pat and Karen were married in 2005 and honeymooned in Hawaii. Travel soon became a big part of their life together. Some of their destinations include the British Isles, Spain, Morocco, Australia and New Zealand, Panama, Prague, numerous cruises, and road trips with the Sun Lakes RV Club. Pat and Karen also spent several weeks on a mission trip in Austria. Even on vacation, her servant's heart was evident. Golf was one of Karen's passions. She was a member of the Sun Lakes Women's Golf Club, Ladies Executive Golf, Dominguez Hills Golf Club, and the Rio Hondo Women's Golf Group among others. If there was no lightning in the forecast, chances are good you could find her on a course. True to her giving nature, Karen did not just participate in these clubs, she was often an officer, lending her accounting and organizational skills. In 2012, Karen and Pat moved to Sun Lakes and found their new church home at LifePoint Church, where they were active in Bible study groups. In addition to her busy golf schedule, Karen was active in many charitable endeavors over the years including Sun Lakes Charity Week, the Women for HOPE golf tournament, H.E.L.P., and the Downey Assistance League. Karen touched the lives of hundreds of people. She was loved by so many and will be missed.
