June has always been the month of new beginnings. It is the month of the June Solstice, when the sun reaches its northernmost position in the sky resulting in the longest day of the year. It is a significant turning point of the year and is often associated with change. Celebrations surrounding this day go back as far as 2500 BC when the Stonehenge unique stone circle was thought to be erected to establish the date of the Summer Solstice. It seems appropriate then that we celebrate change and a new beginning for all of us here at OHCC. After so many months of isolation from friends and family and the loss of our favorite activities, we were notified that the Clubhouse was opening along with the library. Quickly folks scrambled to sign up for rooms and organize their groups. With little advanced notice, our librarians decided to continue delivering books during the month of May. Starting June 2, books will only be available for pickup and return at the library. The following is the modified schedule when the staff will be available to assist you with your library needs: Mondays, 10 am to 12 pm and 6 to 8 pm • Wednesdays, 2 to 4 pm • Fridays, 10 am to 12 pm. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn is a fascinating look at the dedication and brilliance of the British Code Breakers during World War II. There is enough historical truth to the story that you can hope for the best, but also enough mystery to make you fear the worst. The Library Journal's review stated that "The Rose Code is everything you love about an 'unputdownable' novel and more." It can be found on May's book list in OHCC Living. 4.7 stars. For 14 months our library has been closed, but thanks to the following ladies, we were able to survive and bring you one of the greatest treasures during the hardest of times — the written word. A very special thank you to Ella Jarf, Ruth Schafer, Sharon Andrews, Kathleen Payne, and Dolores Hofmann. These ladies have been re- filing books, purging and donating books to other organizations, and managing the paperback and the reserve books. Without Marilyn Vetlesen who processed, stored, and prepared all the new releases for the mobile librarians, our books would have remained on the shelves of our library collecting dust. Thanks ladies! ~ Sally Benton "A book is like a garden carried in the pocket." Library Association JUNE BOOK BUYS The Community Image and Marketing Committee Discovering the Possibilities The Community Image and Marketing Committee and the Landscape Committee have completed their joint recommendation to reinvent the front entry to our Community. Our vision includes a new monument that reflects our brand identity with understated elegance. The landscaping will continue the "California Resort" look of the Clubhouse with large architectural plantings and guardhouse improvements. In order to develop our recommendation, Committee members studied the finest resorts in Southern California, worked with landscape designers, gained input from vendors, listened to our fellow residents, and consulted Management and Staff. The joint recommendation is scheduled to be reviewed by the Master Board at its June meeting. The CIMC continues to work with Clubs, Villages, and Committees to ensure excellence in our Community and preserve our image and brand. Our hard- working staff understand our mission and continue to work with us to achieve pride of ownership and increased home values. The committee welcomes all residents observations and comments. The members of the committee are Tom Murphy (Co-Chair) twmmur-phy@ gmail.com, Judy Caston (Co-Chair), Jeff Mowers (Vice-Chair), Christy Cooper, Christine Ross, Marcy Samoiloff and Nancy Trimino.
