COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD 16 | THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2021 | By Rita Nastri, 698-8640 I'm not sure that our new residents and neighbors know how involved The Colony is with the Marines at Camp Pendleton. Sharon Boll has had a wonderful response to "Invite a Marine to Thanksgiving Dinner," and I have collected Toys for Tots every Christmas (more about that in September/October). Last year, after a special request, Colony residents provided 1,800 cookies to the Marines for Christmas. Now it's time for the Formal Attire collection. Now that many restrictions have been lifted, the YMCA at Camp Pendleton has again requested The Colony's assistance in collecting gently used ball gowns, tuxedos, fancy formal accessories (purses, cummerbunds, dressy shoes, etc.) in preparation for the Marine Corps Birthday Balls held throughout the Base on November 10. The gowns and tuxes are offered free at an open house at the Y for the Marine spouses who cannot afford to purchase a tux or ball gown for these events. In past years, Colony residents have donated many gowns, tuxes and accessories to this cause. If you've been "cleaning out" your fancy dress clothes the past year, this is a great chance to provide a special dress or tux for a Marine spouse. I did not do a collection last year because of the COVID restrictions, but people have called throughout the year asking when I can pick up these items. I have two tubs that missed the 2019 cut-off date, and I would like to have more for delivery to the Y showroom for display and distribution. You all have been very generous to the Marines at Camp Pendleton, and it is my pleasure to help you provide for this program. I have met so many kind people in The Colony through this program and hope to now meet many of our new neighbors. Please call me to book your pick-up date. The cut-off date is Wednesday, September 1.
