COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD | THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2021 | 19 Then comes one of those special days where you wake up to a quiet world of white. I took this photo on May 21, and being a Southern California girl, I was so excited to have this fairyland just outside my van window. General Sherman – Sequoia National Park. Biggest living thing in the world. Its top is broken due to lightning, so it grows wider instead of taller. (Just like me--shrinking and thickening!) El Capitan, the world's largest hunk of granite. There is a meadow across the road from El Cap where people picnic and watch those crazy rock climbers. It can take three days to over a week to climb El Capitan, depending on one's expertise and the route chosen up the face. One evening, we counted 11 different groups of lights on the rock face where people were bedding down for the night with their beds hanging from pegs hammered into the rock wall. Crazy, crazy, crazy! I like being old, and I'm sure if I had taken up rock climbing, I would have never made it to old. Even though Tioga Pass was closed, I was able to drive two other passes – the Sonora Pass and Highway 4. Both topped out over 9,000 feet and were dotted with many snow- framed lakes. This one is Mosquito Lake on Highway 4. Have no idea why something so beautiful should be named for an ugly biting bug!
