Roz was born on the island of Trinidad, but grew up in Oklahoma and Texas. As a young wife and mother, she first took some painting classes and enjoyed it. Later she went to law school, became a lawyer, and had her law practice in San Bernardino for years. During that time, she moved to Sun Lakes and commuted; but it wasn't until after she retired that she began painting again. She has been a very active member of the Art League ever since, not only taking classes, but also holding many offices and chairmanships. She has since become very successful in several art mediums, and has won many ribbons for her beautiful paintings. This is Roz's story in her own words: I started painting when my husband was sent to Oahu, Hawaii to do a two-year tour on a submarine out of Guam. We had a three- month-old daughter and she and I moved into Navy housing in Pearl Harbor. My husband was at sea most of the time. I was able to take plein air classes there as soon as my daughter was old enough to be cared for at Child Care. When we moved to California, I took more plein air classes in Laguna Beach. Unfortunately, I didn't learn much from my instructors, who were professionals and more interested in painting their own beautiful paintings. I discontinued lessons while in law school and in practice, but I resumed after retirement. I joined the Art League and began taking every class offered with such gifted teachers as David Farrington, Helga Batman, Don Roth, Joe Oakes, Steve McGill, and many others. They actually taught me how to paint with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastels. Sometimes there would be a demonstration, after which each student worked on whatever he or she chose. Each teacher went from one student to another giving advice and answering questions. Now I can do plein air painting with artists from the desert who aren't there to teach anyone, but rather to get together to enjoy the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and companionship. I still take lessons and will continue to take those offered by the Art League so that I can continue to learn and occasionally win a ribbon or sell a painting. 22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2021 | Art League The award-winning artists at the May Mini Art Show were (L-R) June Kessen, 3rd Place; Frank Bonarico, 2nd Place; Roz Miller, 1st Place and Best of Show.
