"Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains." ~ Diane Ackerman Hey there fellow gardeners! Isn't it exciting that we can all be together again? The world is finally turning right side up and we'll be live in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom, Wed., July 14, from 10 am to 12 pm. Men are also welcome and they surely won't want to miss this month's guest speaker, Rose Horton with Biltright Construction/EasyTurf. Rose has been in the synthetic turf industry for the past 10 years. Rose was born and raised in California and she really enjoys designing turf projects with hardscapes such as paver, cement, rocks and many other landscaping materials. You don't want to miss this one, especially with rumors of another drought blowing in the winds. See you there. The month of July is finally here, and this year we can actually have picnics, parties, games, fun, good times, and laughter with our family, friends, and Sun Lakes community. And now that we are finally allowed to gather together, let's all take a moment to remember the purpose of the Fourth of July. It is a national holiday widely known for fireworks, trips to the pool, and tasty BBQ! However, the history behind the Fourth of July is a long one and it's important to celebrate the true meaning behind Independence Day and pay homage to America's quest for freedom. Now back to the really momentous stuff — our gardens. Summer brings with it sunshine, lazy days, farmers markets… and best of all, an amazing array of fresh local flowers. What are the best seasonal blooms to buy in July? Here's a quick guide: Orchids, Delphinium (larkspur), Lilies, Dahlias, Gardenias, Gerber Daisies, Hydrangeas, Iris, and Sunflowers. This is of course just a partial list. If you are uncertain as to what to plant, I recommend that you check with Cherry Valley Nursery. They are a faithful and key sponsor of the Sun Lakes Garden Club and are always ready to help. Your Garden Club board wishes you a happy and safe Fourth of July and leaves you with these thoughts from the infamous Erma Bombeck: "You have to love a nation who celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it's Patriotism." For membership contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. The Ballroom resonated with the songs of Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks, and Dolly Parton, and the appreciative audience loved it. Musical producer, Chris Isaacson, introduced the show, which opened with videos of the celebrities portrayed playing in the background. The featured artists were Karissa Noel, Jessie Payo, and Anthony Fedorov singing Islands In The Stream. They were joined by guest singer Jake Simpson, who was a Star Search champion. Noel portrayed Patsy Cline in her heyday, singing Lovesick Blues, Walking After Midnight, and She's Got You. Payo sang the songs of Dolly Parton: 9 to 5, Sleep With One Eye Open, and Tennessee Mountain Home. She played the guitar like Dolly too, and scenes from Dolly's movies played on the screen. Fedorov, who was an American Idol finalist, portrayed Garth Brooks with The River, If Tomorrow Never Comes, Standing Outside the Fire, and Billy Joel's Shameless. Noel returned to sing Patsy Cline's great hits, I Fall To Pieces, So Wrong, and Crazy, as videos of Patsy filled the screen behind her. Payo came out on stage again to sing Old Black Kettle, Jolene, and Dolly's greatest original hit, I Will Always Love You. Guest singer, Jake Simpson, sang his rendition of Tennessee Whiskey and the Eagles' Desperado, accompanying himself on piano. Fedorov then returned to sing The Thunder Rolls and The Dance. Following that, the whole cast came out for the finale, reprising the song that opened the show, Islands in the Stream. The accompaniment behind the singers included the powerful sounds of Kayla Matsuno, Adam Hall on guitar, Chad Wright on drums, Tim Weed on violin, Ben White on bass, and Andrew Kesler on piano.
