| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2021 | 45 Hello all you wonderful Sun Lakers. Since our club has not gone anywhere, this month's article will be "different." Question? Are we ready for the beginning of summer? Now that is what I would rate as definitely A FOOLISH QUESTION. Sure, we are. So here is another foolish question. What is the Fourth of July best known for? It's known of course for fireworks, BBQs, family, and lots of fun. Well, if I may, and since I am the one writing this I can, I would like to go back into time, way back in time to the beginning and the real reason why we celebrate the Fourth of July. When was the last time any of us took the time to go back and read the document that put this great country together as one nation? I did. It really is very interesting to read this document that list 23 separate charges against Britain. Keep in mind, we are talking about a population here in the 13 colonies of about 2.5 million going up against a world power with a population of about 7 million people. Now the part that is kind of interesting to me is why we celebrate on July 4. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn't actually signed until Aug. 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August. Some delegates were away on business when the Declaration was debated, but they were back in Congress to sign on Aug. 2. Other delegates were present when the Declaration was debated but added their names after Aug. 2. So why July 4. That is the date that our Continental Congress officially adopted it and we became a new nation. So, what now? Well, so much for our history lesson. If this was a history class, I would give all an A+. So again, I ask what now? Well, the words for the month are "LET'S PAARRTTYY." After all, fireworks are going off in a couple of days. And if that's not enough for a party, then how about its summer. And before I go, Happy Birthday to: Jon Reese, Darrell Pendleton, Carmen Snook, Laurie Palmer, Don Tennis, Colin Pay, Karen Hill, Nancy Boyle, Vivian Myrdahl, Gino Demonaco, Deborah McDonald, Robin Nemire, Peggy Andrews, Jim Fitch, Allen Hill. I finish my article this month with both the best of wishes to you for a great and happy month and summer, while at the same time offering you a caution. That nasty virus called COVID is still in our world. Happy Fourth of July. Happy summer.
