50 50 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2021 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2021 | Our club has never seen so much play on our still-new-feeling courts! We are experiencing more players as clinics organized by President Tony Browne attract new and longtime residents alike. Play is thriving morning, afternoon, and evening as the weather warms. The Master Board's decision to create a true pickleball complex on the north side is coming to fruition with new nets on order and final striping of the courts soon to be in place. When complete, the complex will host eight courts. We can hardly wait! All of us have had to endure a trying year-and-a-half with so many activities curtailed. Pickleball has been a real blessing for those seeking healthy activities outdoors. After the cancellation of last year's National Championship Tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, it is exciting to learn that this grand event returns to our low desert backyard in a few months. It is now scheduled to run from Dec. 6 through 14. Having the opportunity to watch the best of the sport, both professional and amateur, so close to home is an enviable advantage for Sun Lakers. You owe it to yourself, even if you don't play, to get down to witness the matches and enjoy the amenities of the tennis world's outstanding venue. Mark your calendars! Some of our club players have been venturing to local tournaments and club members have accompanied them to watch the play. Hank Huisman and Tony Browne played at a Newport Beach event in the spring and they were joined by Pat and Michele Carter at a fun competition in Moreno Valley not long after. These events have afforded those of us who enjoy playing on surrounding courts such as Yucaipa, Beaumont, and Cherry Valley the chance to meet old friends drawn to the action. If nothing else, the COVID curse has taught us how upset many people get when it comes to RULES. We are all weary of the accounts of fights over masks, vaccines, and seating limits. Fortunately, picklers are among the most gracious of competitors. Nevertheless, as in all sports, rules can be annoying and cause disagreements. The most common source of consternation is the "out call." The national organization sought to clarify line calls in last year's rules updates. The intent, as we understand it, is to encourage more leniency regarding such calls. If you don't see the ball "clearly out" then it's IN. We should see space between ball and line to call OUT! At least, this approach will prolong rallies, the most fun part of pickle. See you on the courts!
