The Billiards Club, after a slow start due to COVID-19, is open
and rolling. Masks are not required for those who are vaccinated,
and members are welcome to play anytime without a specific
appointment. This has brightened the future of all our members.
What a grand time it was when 18 pool players played four rounds
of 8-Ball on May 27. All players got to play four games each with four
different players. As a handicap, when an 'A' player competed with a
'B' player, and after the solids and stripes were first established, the 'B'
player then got to remove three balls of their choice from the field of
play. No such handicap when two 'B' players competed.
This tournament utilized a new "round robin" format in lieu of
the conventional "bracket elimination" format. This new format
allowed all players to play for the entire match instead of half of the
players being eliminated after one round in the bracket format. The
challenge is the bookkeeping to get all players their turn with all the
tables kept in play.
It was originally planned to play two rounds, but this took less
than an hour, so a third round was added, and then a fourth, and we
were done in about two hours. A win gained 10 points plus one point
for each opponent's ball remaining on the table. New faces included
Denny Kent, Del Mank. Karla Calahan, Jim Kydd and Bob St. Laurent,
but as a group there were only a few wins and they all got to meet
some of our better players to learn how to play 8-Ball.
After four rounds of play, the four players with the most points had
a play-off for the cash prizes. John Mitchell won $50 for first place,
Bob Sandler won $25 for second, Gary Pelcher won $10 for third, and
Pete Fiore won $5 for fourth.
