As a small child in Northern Minnesota, I grew up celebrating the 4th of July at my parents' resort on Lake of the Woods. My mother would bake a red velvet cake, decorate it with firecrackers, and we would all gather to honor my dad on his birthday! He would smile and say, "Isn't it great that the whole nation comes together to honor my birthday." With a twinkle in his eye, and a laugh to compare with none other, he would tell us stories of when he flew Admiral Halsey during WWII. He was my hero, and it seemed logical that the world recognized him on this special day. It was not until I was in the 4th grade, that I learned that the 4th of July had a much deeper meaning. Through books I learned that Independence Day was the annual celebration of our nation's birth. It commemorated the passage of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. We had finally gained our freedom and separated from Great Britain. Books became a part of my life, and libraries became the vessels to learn about more historical events. I began to wonder what the oldest library was in America. According to History Magazine, the oldest library began with a 400 book donation by a Massachusetts clergyman, John Harvard. It was given to a new university that eventually honored him by adopting his name, Harvard University. Today, public libraries are focal points for almost every community in America, including ours in OHCC. One of the novels on July's new book list is The Paris Library by Janel Skeslien Charles. World War II Paris, during the German occupation, forms the setting for this intelligent and sensuously rich novel of a young woman's coming of age. The main character, Odile, takes a position at the American library in Paris. As the war progresses, the Germans capture her twin brother. When the Germans close the library to all Jewish patrons, she places herself in danger by transporting books to them. It is an unforgettable novel about the power of books, the bonds of friendship and the ordinary heroes who can be found in the most dangerous of times and the quietest of places. (Kirkus Reviews) Hours of operation for staffed library service are: Monday: 10 am to 12 pm, and 6 to 8 pm • Wednesday: 2 to 4 pm • Friday: 10 am to 12 pm. Come and pick out a book from the open shelves or return the one you have. ~Sally Benton Library Association JULY BOOK BUYS The Community Image and Marketing Committee Exploring the Possibilities The Community Image and Marketing Committee has created a new marketing brochure for prospective residents and realtors. The brochure highlights the beauty of our community, its many amenities, and why OHCC is simply the best active adult community in San Diego. The brochure is available at the HOA office. All residents may obtain one copy for free. Perhaps you have friends or family that you would like to share this with. Additional copies, as realtors may need, are available for a fee. The brochure is also available on our website at oceanhillscountryclub.com, to view or download. The Committee continues to meet regularly each month to address issues and suggestions from residents and committees. We also work closely with the HOA to make sure we continue to enhance and improve our community image, to ensure consistency of our message and protect home values. The committee welcomes all residents observations and comments. The members of the committee are Tom Murphy (Co-Chair) twmmurphy@ gmail.com, Judy Caston (Co-Chair), Jeff Mowers (Vice-Chair), Christy Cooper, Christine Ross, Marcy Samoiloff and Nancy Trimino.
