This month's member spotlight is on Judith Steenson, an artist who "paints with fabric" when creating her beautiful quilts. At the last Art Show in 2019, one of her quilts won the coveted People's Choice Awards. Judi is a first generation U.S. citizen. Her mother Mary came to this country by herself at age 19. Mary's father was planning an arranged marriage which she did not want. With some help, she secretly left Ireland for America and settled with a family in New Jersey. She moved to Boston where she met her husband and where Judi was born. Judi's father, Vern Rippetoe, was in the Army during World War II. When he had to ship out, he had Mary and their baby go to San Bernardino to live with his parents until he came home. When Judi was five years old, her grandmother taught her how to sew on an old treadle sewing machine. Judi made clothes and quilts at that young age. Judi attended Valley College and Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. She became a teacher in the Fontana School District. It was while teaching there that she met Karl Steenson. After they married, they both went to work for the Rialto School district. Judi became a Vice Principal, and retired from the teaching profession in 2001 after 37 years. Judi and Karl have been married for 53 years. They lived in Rialto and raised their son, Michael, whom they adopted in 1979. Michael has given them two wonderful grandchildren. They moved to Sun Lakes after they retired, where Judi has enjoyed creating her wonderful award-winning quilts. She said, "she loves living here in Sun Lakes and also loves being in the Art League." 26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2021 | Art League Judith Steenson holding the beautiful and very detailed quilt that she made especially for her granddaughter on her 13th birthday The winning artists and their paintings at the June Mini Art Show.
