44 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2021 | Yiddish Culture Club It's that time of year when the Yiddish Culture Club holds its annual Challah Bake! Save the date of Sat., Aug. 14 at noon in the North Clubhouse. Challah is a wonderful braided egg bread that is served for every Friday night Sabbath dinner as well as almost every Jewish holiday. Not only will you learn how to make this special bread, but you will learn about its history. Each "baker" will receive step by step instructions so you can make your very own Challah, take it home, and bake right in your oven. YCC will provide all the needed ingredients and utensils that will be yours to take home as well! Even those of you that never cook-Guys or Gals-YOU CAN DO THIS! You haven't had French Toast until you have tried using Challah bread. While the bread is rising and you are enjoying some refreshments, Marilyn Forhane will enlighten us on food safety practices. You can also learn how to store those leftovers for another day. So, leave your rings at home… dress casual… and join the fun! Deadline to register for this event is Aug. 9. Flyers with a registration form are at the Main Clubhouse rack by the Receptionist Desk. Checks are made payable to YCC. Members cost is $12 and non-members will be $15. The braided egg loaf called challah today arose in southern Germany in the 1400s, when local Jews began to adopt the region's braided loaves. Locals used these braided breads for special occasions; so a braided lean loaf, suggestive of a special occasion, soon became the most popular form of Ashkenazi Sabbath bread. Please notify Marilyn Forhane, YCC's Sunshine Board Member at (951) 845-9455 (mfor18@gmail.com) if you know anyone who should receive a get well or sympathy card. Notify Diane Stone, VP Programs at (951) 769-0130 (swmbo3@ gmail.com) if you have program ideas or want to borrow one of the DVDs from the YCC Library. Membership VP, Diane Berley at (818) 943-6457 (berley52@aol. com) wants to hear about any changes in your contact information and will answer any questions about membership. The Yiddish Culture Club welcomes all residents of any denomination
