58 58 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2021 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2021 | Who says they're the Dog Days of August? Sure, Sun Lakes warms up. Sure, the Banning Pass can sizzle. But we have pickleball in the evening and beautiful, inviting pools all over the community for refreshment during the day (or night). So what's not to love? Speaking of love, the club got to enjoy a very fun event as July closed. The capable planners of some of the great activities we have available thought it appropriate for us to emulate the Olympic Summer Games taking place in Tokyo. And of course, your organization got on board. In a BIG way. Along with so many clubs, Pickleball put on a special opportunity for the members: "A Love Pickleball Tournament." The tourney showcased all our local talent. We had Mixed Doubles on Friday followed the next morning by both Women's and Men's Doubles. Our thanks to the club officers and helpers who staged a great complement to the community-wide activities put on to give Sun Lakers a chance to shine in the summer swelter. As some of the ladies' shirts proclaim: "We don't sweat, we sparkle." The outcome of these matches wasn't known at press time. We'll have results next month. The winners will be part of an award ceremony in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom at the close of all the festivities, scheduled for Aug. 7 so there is still time to drop by and congratulate those who pitched in to make this a fun SLCC first. Our thanks to the Recreation Department for the creative deployment of so many of our resources. Even if you aren't feeling competitive enough to try tournament play, consider getting out to play with the friendly folks who inhabit our courts. There are a lot of good motivational videos around — one that caught our attention on YouTube was about Terry Nemoff of San Francisco. (We came across it on the Crazy Pickleball Lady website.) Injured in a bike collision, Terry got a terrible MRSA infection that nearly killed him. After too long on his couch, an old friend introduced him to pickleball. Even in his fragile state, Terry could begin to play enough to catch a better fever than the one the infection gave him — Pickleball Fever! He credits pickleball with "saving my life." It's an inspiring tale. If you want information on when to come out and play, call Judy Luna at (949) 929 2390. See you on the courts! Pickleball Club POP Tennis The POP Tennis club celebrated summer with a POP Pool party on June 26 at the North Clubhouse pool. Members gathered to enjoy assorted pizzas along with homemade appetizers and treats. "It was nice to see everyone off the courts for some delicious food and to catch up," long time member Jeanne McGuire commented. The party was just the start of summer fun as the POP tennis club participated in the Sun Lakes Summer Games in late July. Members who signed up for the POP Summer Games participated in a round robin tournament and played with each participating member. The event took place in the evenings on July 27 and 29. Each game won counted toward the overall score of the individual POP member and the player with the highest overall game count won gold. Winners were posted on the boards in front of the POP tennis courts and will receive their medals at the Sun Lakes Summer Game ceremony on Aug. 7 at the Main Clubhouse. Thanks to all the members for their continued love and support of the game of POP tennis. The summer games gave them a chance to show off their skills and sportsmanship. Hi again! It's July 6 and time for the August Lifestyles article. It's been easier to write an article these past two months because WOWIE we've been playing these last two months! We do want to welcome back those of you who were playing prior to March 2020. But we especially welcome the players who have joined our group these last couple of months. GREAT to see new faces among those of us who have been around for a while. But wait - there's always room for more. Again I say, come to the Ballroom and give us a try. Those who have keep coming back so evidently it is fun. If you have never played, please come and give us a try. We have newer, top quality tables, balls, nets, and some loaner paddles for your use. We have all levels of players — those who have played for years, including tournament-quality players to those just starting. So again I say, "come give us a try." A fun way to exercise and develop great eye/ hand coordination. Just a fun time to be had for those who come. Normally we play Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 4 to 6 pm, and Sat., 10 am to 12 noon in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (normally). Because the Ballroom is such a popular venue for so many varied events, our time slot sometimes gets canceled. Therefore, if you are not a regular attendee, please refer to the Sun Lakes website at sunlakescc.com and click on "Recreation" then click on "Classes," and finally click on "Table Tennis Group" for the current months up to date schedule. You can also check the Main Clubhouse events board across from the reception desk or call (951) 845-2191 for that day's calendar. We have all skill levels currently participating and welcome all newcomers. We have several newer quality tables, and all the equipment is provided free by the Sun Lakes Recreation Department. A fun way to exercise! Please come give us a try. There are no fees. Laced tennis shoes required - no exceptions! For info, contact Roland at (951) 769-3978. Table Tennis/Ping Pong
