Would future generations of your family appreciate knowing about you? Most of us think not. We assume our day to day lives are not so special, and there's not much to write about. Well, my grandfather didn't do anything special either. He was a farmer and did what farmers do. But he also kept a daily journal of everything that went on. Not the details, just the briefest of notes about weather, people, crops, animals, family, trips and every-day things. Each Christmas, he would be given a new diary, which he would then use all year long. And I'm very fortunate to have his diaries – from 1901 through to when he died in 1943. Now these little notebooks are my time machine, and they take me back. I'm visiting my grandparents and their farm. I'm seeing my father as a child and watching him grow up. I'm participating in family events and getting to know family friends. I'm watching planting, harvesting and threshing. I'm sharing the life and times as they were then – all of which will never in the history of the world be repeated. The point is – my grandfather didn't think he was special, or that what he did was worthy of praise, or even that some future generation would read his diaries and be moved by the story of his life. No, he just briefly noted the happenings of each day. So whether we think our life is all that interesting or not, it would be well worth spending a few moments writing about ourselves. Next month we'll have some pointers to help you do this. Remember: If you don't do it, who will? Please give us your e-mail address and we'll notify you of Discovery Club meetings or outings. Call (951) 769-4482 or e-mail wefbev@verizon.net. ~ Willis Fagan Don't forget our Travel Expo on July 20 starting at 11 am.
