Garden Club While the Franciscans may not have made the trek inland to the Pass area, they did initiate the planting of grape vines throughout the coastal regions of California. The vines found a very hospitable environment in which to thrive. Today, grapes are the state's third-most valuable agricultural commodity and are primarily grown in the Central Coast, Napa, Sonoma and Lodi. So, planting a few vines at Four Seasons only seems patriotic. We have sunshine, soil (needs a little help with drainage), and water. For us, water is the key ingredient. Grapevines require ample amounts during the summer months. A fully trellised mature vine on a hot day in the Central Valley requires about eight to 10 gallons (30.3 - 37.9 l) of water per day, e.g., seven flushes of a high efficient toilet. Too much water is also a danger and fruit on the vines may succumb to cracking if the vines are allowed to dry and then wetted again. It is necessary to maintain an even level of soil moisture to avoid cracking. A drip system is a good way to regulate an even flow of water to the roots of the vine. We do have an abundance of birds here at Four Seasons so they will compete with our gardeners for the fruit. The leaves of the vines do provide a colorful background and shade in the Free free water leak detection with repair or reroute of bad water line. A $250 Value! Exp.
