| THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2021 | 39 CLUB NEWS Bocce has been a sport enjoyed for centuries by many cultures. The first known documentation of bocce was in 5200 BC, with an Egyptian tomb painting that depicted two boys playing. The game spread throughout the Middle East and Asia, where it was eventually adopted by the Greeks and passed on to the Romans. It was fine-tuned in Italy to its present form. You can play this fun game right here in your own backyard (or behind the Clubhouse). The court is available day and night, and the balls are on the court waiting for players to let them fly. A group of 12 of us have been playing and partying together for years. The original players still together from its formation are Jeanne Bender, Herb Reynolds, Mavis Akiyoshi, Sylvia Maxwell, Carol Roesel, Kathy Schilling and Kathy Lewis. Over the last year or two, Donna Lindsey, Jamie and Skip Calvert, Randy McKee, Terry Mata, Nelly Andriano and Rick Pepin have joined as permanent players. We have also enjoyed the company of several substitute players, including Chuck Gordon, Carol DeWitt, Shawn Furrer and Sharon Smith. The game is lots of fun, easy to learn (the rules are posted at the court), and everyone can play. Grab a group of friends, head to the bocce court and carry on the game of centuries. No reservations needed! Bocce Our Mah Jongg group will have the first game since 2019 in the Lounge on Monday, Aug.30, from 5:30 to 9 pm. It's been a casual and fun game in the past, and we look forward to a similar experience in the future. Call for more info. We would also like to offer an Instructional Seminar for new Mah Jongg players in mid-August, if possible. Please call me if anyone you know is interested in learning the game or if you want to learn. Mah Jongg New resident John Knitter, who is a tennis pro, has offered to give free tennis lessons and advice to all tennis players, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced. John will be on the tennis court every third Saturday at 8 am. There is no need to sign up and it is FREE, so just come on down and meet some fellow tennis players. If you are a new or a longtime resident who would like to play or to learn, please come join us on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 8 am. Where else but at The Colony can you get free tennis lessons!
