34 | THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2021 | Although my mother was an avid quilter for most of my life, I didn't start quilting until I retired. That was when I discovered I had a fabric fetish. It's almost impossible for me to pass a fabric store anywhere in the world without going in. I'm always sure that the perfect piece of material is just sitting there, waiting for me to discover it. I prefer bright, modern fabrics and make all of my bed-sized and art quilts with them. When my husband and I started spending our winters at The Colony, I was delighted to find a group of like-minded people. It wasn't long before my "stash" of fabric and my collection of sewing/embroidery machines had outgrown the studio in our house. We are fortunate to have a fairly large lot, so we added a room to our home where I am now able to house everything in bins, drawers and cabinets. If you used to quilt, currently quilt, or are interested in starting to quilt, you should join us in the Annex on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 am. Each of us works on our own projects at our own pace. If you have questions and need help, or just want to learn a new skill, there is always someone who can help. Contact Mary Dettmers (698-3171) for more information. Welcome back (to almost normal) quilters. As we resume our weekly workshops, we invite you to join us in the Annex every Tuesday from 9:15 am to 12 pm for almost three hours of quality sewing time, show and tell and camaraderie. Bring your own machine and notions, a current project or some handwork. (Chocolate is optional.) Finish a UFO, or start something new and work at your own pace. We occasionally work on a group project, which is optional. If you have questions or a problem, bring it to the workshop. Problem solving is a shared, learning experience for everyone. We also have a new supply of donated fabric you may use for charitable projects if you choose. New quilters, if you know how to operate your machine and have basic sewing skills, we encourage you to join us. Betty Pilley will present a Workshop in the Annex from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 26. We have spaces available for anyone wanting to participate in this workshop taught by an award-winning watercolorist. Cost is $30. Give me a call to reserve your space. You will need to prepay at the time you make your reservation to guarantee your space. About the Artist/Instructor: Betty Pilley showed an interest in art at a very young age and, as a nature lover, her focus is landscapes and still-life, abstract and portrait painting. As a young adult, Betty enjoyed using her creative, artistic talents for various projects at church. She currently teaches watercolor classes at the Hemet Valley Art Association Gallery. Betty was named Artist of the Year in 2011 and 2012, and continues to win top awards with the Hemet Valley Art Association Gallery, the Fallbrook Art Center and the Redlands Gallery. She feels privileged to have participated in the 2014 "Evening of Art." Betty has shown her work at the Hemet Valley Gallery, the Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook, the Santa Rosa Plateau and the Redlands Gallery. Throughout the years, Betty has experimented with pastels, oils and charcoal, and has come to appreciate the freshness and speed in watercolor art. She has finished a few of her favorite pieces in just a couple of hours. The Colony is familiar to Betty as she has taught workshops here in the past, and we are looking forward to her return.
