Kelly Rimmer Many of us as young children might remember the phrase "Beware, it's the dog days of summer." Parents would tell us that swimming was forbidden, the water was unhealthy and could even be poisonous. If you had a cut or sore, it would not heal if you went into the water. Checking facts rather than relying on my mother's wisdom, I found that Dog Days referred to what is often the hottest and most sultry time of the year for most of our country, and dogs as well as we humans, embraced lying around in order to endure the oppressive summer heat. In truth, it had nothing to do with any of that folklore, but was the time when Sirius, the "Dog Star" rose and set with the sun, between July 3 and Aug. 11, giving off so much light that people believed it warmed the earth causing the long stretch of sultry weather. That has also been disproved. With that said, perhaps you should ask your dog. For after all, "All that there is to know, only dogs know." Or, if all else fails, check your library for more facts! I just received some interesting statistics from our 12-month Mobile Librarian Program. Out of 190 paid library members, 81 were served by this mobile delivery system, and they requested the following numbers of books: • 48 people signed up for more than 20 books. • 20 ordered between 10 and 20 books. • 13 ordered 10 or less books. I think we all can agree that this innovative service during those trying times truly helped so many through the isolation of COVID 19. So many of you have thanked the staff for this program. We, in turn, thank you for helping us keep literature alive. Speaking of thanks, all of the volunteer librarians and staff had a wonderful luncheon gathering in July. After almost a year and a half, we were delighted to be able to see each other face to face. The room was filled with laughter and smiles. Bobby's provided the food. What a treat. The food was great, and we didn't have to do the dishes! Watch for notifications on when we will resume our regular hours for staffed library services. We have been busy training new librarians, who are working now. More information will follow. Visit OHCC Library, look for a book, grab a beach chair, head for the ocean and enjoy "The Dog Days of Summer," a time for reading. ~ Sally Benton Library Association AUGUST BOOK BUYS The Community Image and Marketing Committee The Community Image and Marketing Committee continues to work on finalizing its Front Entry Recommendations to the Master Board, which were approved in concept at the June Master Board meeting. Several items needed further input and specifics and they have been given to the Board. Costs and vendor submissions are being worked on by HOA staff for finalization and the ability to begin work on the project in the months ahead. The subcommittee of the CIMC and the Landscape Committee have worked for many months, over long hours, to deliver a design that we believe will increase home values, give residents pride of ownership, and that reflects our beautiful community through its first impression. Our community entrance monument has not been updated since the original developer created it. Soon, we will finally have an elegant design that carries our new brand identity and better reflects Ocean Hills Country Club. The Committee continues to meet regularly each month to address issues and suggestions from residents and committees. We also work closely with the HOA to make sure we continue to enhance and improve our Community image, to ensure consistency of our message and protect home values. The committee welcomes all residents observations and comments. The members of the committee are Tom Murphy (Co-Chair) twmmurphy@gmail.com, Judy Caston (Co-Chair) Jeff Mowers (Vice-Chair), Christy Cooper, Christine Ross, Marcy Samoiloff and Nancy Trimino.
