I know a lot of us are getting anxious to play our
home course, so I thought I would sneak onto the
front nine to check out the scenery and report back
on what I discovered. Well, one thing is obvious:
all the greens are larger and seemingly flatter.
Hopefully that means they will produce more
greens in regulation and smoother putts for us
duffers. The bunkers are also being redone. More
on them in a couple months. The accompanying
three photos might help give you the sense of some
of the changes underway. The photo of the third
green tries to capture its size and contour, noting
that the slope from back to front has disappeared.
Another photo taken from the fourth tee box shows
how the fourth green has been moved left away
from the tree that many of us have boinked with an errant shot. The third photo taken from the
new eighth tee box helps us visualize the expanded length of the hole into a par four. Next month
I will trespass on, I mean explore, the back nine to report on the changes being made there.
On a sad note, one of our eminent golf pals, Tom Penick, recently passed away. He was an
excellent golfer and quite a character who sarcastically once told me after watching one of my
quick take backs that "You have an athletic swing!" I also witnessed one of his holes in one at
Rancho Bernardo. That's the first time I saw an ace delivered by someone with a cigar hanging
out of his mouth. As a side bar, Tom was the cousin of the famous teaching pro Harvey Penick,
the author of Little Red Book, Lessons And Teachings From A Lifetime Of Golf.
Until next time. And on a positive note, it's difficult to lose golf balls if you're not playing.
