Our July party, "It's SIX O'clock Somewhere" started right on time with 200 members attending. DJ Bryan was in great form getting the party started with some of Jimmy Buffet's best. In no time everyone transitioned from long-overdue chatting to dancing. What a delightful way to spend an evening under the balmy skies. The Doo Wop and Disco Club is celebrating getting back to what we do - dancing to music of the 50s to 80s. We will close out 2021 with parties in September, October, and November. At the same time, we are laying plans for 2022. Our intentions are to get back to pre-COVID conditions and schedule at least 10 parties. Stay tuned. If you are not already a member and would like to learn how to get tickets for these parties, print out the membership form on our Doo Wop website,* complete the information and drop it by the Clubhouse front desk. Include a check for $10 per person made out to The Doo Wop Club. Our parties are popular and usually sell out. Our venue is too small for all the Doo Wop Club members who wish to attend so we conduct a lottery for both the reserved seat list and the waiting list. *OceanHillsCountryClub.com Log-In; click on "Social Clubs", then Doo Wop & Disco." There are many ways to dance in Ocean Hills: line dance, ballroom, square dance and our Dance Troupe, which offers jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dance. One thing that sets the Dance Troupe apart is that we perform, both at our Ocean Hills extravagances, and other places in the county. But why public performances? Several of our more experienced dancers explained. First, knowing that we will be performing in front of an audience gives us motivation to practice and improve our dancing skills. Everyone wants to be perfect and to show the community what good dancers we are. The troupe works together to achieve something they can be proud of and builds bonds of respect and friendship. Second, it gives our family members a chance to be proud of their moms and grandmas (and have a laugh at what a good sport grandpa is). A third reason to perform is that it gives us a chance to give back to the community. From the proceeds of our last performance, we were able to donate $1,000 to CERT. In addition, many of the Ocean Hills residents love the performances, as shown by the fact that our shows are always sold-out. The shows are expertly produced, with an entertaining story and music, in addition to the dancing. Many of our current dancers joined the troupe after coming to a performance. But the best reason for having performances is that they are fun for both the audience and the dancers. The dancers get to dress up in beautiful costumes and strut across the stage, showing off the moves they have learned over the last two years. One experienced dancer says she loves the feeling of tension, attention and thrills on the stage, as well as the feeling of achievement when a successful performance is completed. Many of our dancers wanted to dance when they were younger but did not have the time or opportunity. Now that they have the time, the troupe gives them the opportunity to learn new skills and to find the joy in movement. The Dance Troupe welcomes new members whether you are new to dance or have experience. We have classes in jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dancing. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact Allison Stewart at als2art@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@ cox.net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. 14 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2021 | Ocean Hills Dance Troupe Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club Village Squares A happy occasion! On July 29, about 50 members of our Village Square Dance Club met to reacquaint ourselves, share our stories, welcome back a few members, and just enjoy gathering together after such a long hiatus. It was a joy to see our friends again and to look forward to a return to our dances. We also enjoyed our dedicated baker Lisa Seaman's array of delicious bundt cakes, and the Haagen Dazs ice cream bars! We ended the evening with high hopes. However, the board met again Aug. 6 and made a very difficult decision. With heavy hearts, we voted to suspend our 2021 schedule. We are the friendliest club, but also the one with the most physical contact among members. We felt a responsibility to protect our members because of the resurgence of COVID cases, especially the Delta variant, and an uptick of cases here in Ocean Hills Country Club. We owe a great deal of appreciation to club co-presidents Barb and Ed Olson, who worked hard to arrange for the new caller, struggled through the club request forms, and worked so hard to accomplish our return. We are hopeful that on Do Dues Day in January 2022, you will see the fruits of our efforts as we are once again sign up members for the Village Squares.
