As we begin September and think about what's happened in the past 18 months, we need to remember Yogi Berra's quote, "It ain't over till it's over." Your Board will monitor and follow county and state guidelines regarding the COVID situation as we all do our best to stay safe. September 11, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Among the many events around the country, in New York the National September 11 Memorial & Museum will have the annual commemoration ceremony. Family members of 9/11 victims will gather on the Memorial Plaza to read aloud the names of those killed. Six moments of silence will be observed, acknowledging when each of the World Trade Center towers was struck and fell, and the times corresponding to the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93. One of the less known facts: Following the 9/11 attacks, more than 500,000 people were unable to leave Lower Manhattan due to the closure of bridges and tunnels throughout the city. Within minutes of the first plane hitting the first tower, multiple fireboats rushed to the scene. The Coast Guard coordinated a large convoy of merchant ships, tugboats, and ferries to evacuate the stranded and injured victims. Among the many quotes about that day, "If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate." ~ Sandy Dahl, the wife of flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl. The Board welcomes Barbra Balser, who will fill the vacancy left by Jerry Hawkins. We thank all the residents who volunteered to fill this position. We now have three new Directors since April. The best way to meet your Directors is to attend a Board Meeting. Feel free to engage us in conversation before or after the meeting (we don't bite). At each meeting representatives of our nine active committees give reports. This is a good way for new residents to know what is happening in our community. One responsibility of Board Directors is serving as a liaison to several committees. The primary role of a Board liaison is to facilitate communication between the Board and the committee served. The role of the liaison is not to direct the day-to-day work of the committee or to dictate the group's working agenda. This helps your Board to stay abreast of the multitude of projects, issues, concerns, and events the committees are addressing. As Board members, we have a responsibility to be good listeners. This means we need to pay attention, be open-minded, ask questions, and provide feedback. Hopefully this helps us to better serve you. Message from the Board of Directors 2 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | SEPTEMBER 2021 | Sincerely, and on behalf of your Board of Directors, Greg Rockvam, Cliff Post, Tony Criscenti, Roxy Snider, Fred Kydd, and Barbra Balser Jim Crase President
