Friends we will miss Don Troyer Don Troyer was the guy with the big smile and rich deep voice often found narrating or singing with the Sun Lakes Chorale. Since 2005, Don and Nancy have loved living in Sun Lakes, enjoying all kinds of activities and events. In Palm Springs, Don enjoyed presenting the Missing Man Table with two other chaplains presenting religious segments on POW/MIA Day at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Don passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2021, from complications from throat surgery. Don was born to Kenneth and Irene Troyer in Three Rivers, Michigan, August 19, 1944, while his father was a soldier in Guam. The first dozen years of Don's life he lived in Middlebury, Indiana, with his folks and two brothers just one block from his grandparents and one block north of the Pumpkin Vine Railroad Depot. The Troyers attended the local Mennonite Church. Later on his parents, Kenneth and Irene Troyer became Adventists from the influence of Don's maternal grandparents and great uncle. The Troyers moved south to Indianapolis when Don's Dad began studies to be a Funeral Director. Don graduated in 1962 from Lawrence Central High School where he sang with the Minstrels. His college years were at Andrews University where he sang with the Collegians and graduated with a BS in Business in 1969. Don met his future wife Nancy Neuharth in college and they married on Valentine's Day, 1970, and were married 51 years. Don and Nancy enjoyed singing Gospel songs together. In 1969, Don was drafted into the US Army and worked as a chaplain's assistant (71MIKE) for four years during Vietnam before entering Andrews University Seminary and received his MDIV in 1976. He pastored churches in the Georgia Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists until 1980 when he joined the US Army Chaplain's Corps as a chaplain, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 2000. Don and Nancy lived overseas in Thailand, Korea, and Germany, and stateside in Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgia, and California. In 2000, Don retired from the Army and the family moved to Germany where Don was Director of the Adventist Servicemen's Center in Frankfurt. Three years later, they returned to Georgia where Don pastored two churches before moving with Nancy in 2005 to Banning, California. Don is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Steph, and his brother Ron Troyer. His parents, Irene and Kenneth Troyer and his brother Keith Troyer pre-deceased him. He loved soldiers — retired and active duty. He loved to sing and did a lot of that with the Sun Lakes Chorale and His Voice Men's Chorus. Don Troyer will be missed by many! He was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on October 11, 1944, and grew up in Bedford, Virginia with his two brothers, Michael and Phillip. He and his wife Chieko Jurkus moved to Sun Lakes in the spring of 2017 with their two dogs Raven, a German Shepard, and Annie, a German Shepard mix. They often visited with other Sun Lakes residents during their daily walks, and he often told us how much he liked living at Sun Lakes because it was a small and friendly community. He also stated that he never, in his life, imagined that he would spend his retirement at a country club as nice and beautiful as Sun Lakes.
