44 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2021 | Yiddish Culture Club This month we are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It is year 5782 on the Hebrew calendar and it is a very important holiday. Called the High Holidays (or High Holy Days), this 10- day period ends with Yom Kippur—the holiest day of the Jewish year. One way to wish someone a happy Rosh Hashanah is "Shanah Tovah," which is an appropriate greeting. This phrase means "good year" in Hebrew and can be used through the season. YCC will celebrate this holiday with a wonderful and scrumptious traditional meal along with great entertainment. Now that everyone is getting together again, please come join us for some laughter and singing! This is always one of the best events and will be in the South Clubhouse on Sept. 8 at 6 pm. Dinner will be catered by Thomas Caterers, a favorite among our members, and will consist of gefilte fish, matzoh ball soup, challah, tri-tip, chicken marsala, roasted potatoes, fresh vegetables, dessert, and coffee. Entertainment for the Jewish high holiday will be the music and comedy of Perry Goldstein along with his musical group Home Grown. The selection will include Jewish songs everyone knows and loves, along with new songs you will enjoy, including Perry's signature song parodies. The cost of this event is $22 pp for members and $27 pp for non-members. Checks should be dropped off at the home of Maryanne Kirschbaum, 1942 Fairway Oaks Ave., by Sept. 3. (There are sign up forms at the Main Clubhouse lobby near the front-desk.) Here are some other interesting facts about Rosh Hashanah. The holiday celebrates the creation of humans on earth. The eating of carrots is thought to ward off evil for the New Year. Pomegranates are eaten as a symbol of the good deeds to come in the New Year. Apples dipped in honey are eaten for sweetness in the coming year. People frequently throw bread into bodies of water to represent the casting away of their sins.
