By Mike Vergara, (951) 461-2889 It's September! The autumnal equinox is this month, so now the nights will be getting longer again. Yay! The word "equinox" is derived from Latin, and roughly means that the day and night are of equal duration. The timings are not exact due to multiple factors, but they are close. On the day of the equinox, the sun rises and sets directly east and west, respectively. Did you get a chance to see Jupiter and Saturn in August? If not, don't worry. They're still close enough and high enough for good viewing. If you missed the Perseid meteor shower, you'll have to wait until early October for the next good one (the Orionids.) If you're up for a challenge, Mercury will be at its highest after sunset on Monday, Sept. 13. Mercury is the planet closest to the sun, so it sets very soon after the sun sets. Look towards the west and west-southwest. You'll see Venus, big and bright, and Mercury will be between Venus and the horizon. Good luck! September's full moon is this year's Harvest Moon. Traditionally, the Harvest Moon is the full moon that is closest to the autumnal equinox. This year the equinox is on the 22nd, and the full moon is on the 20th. The moon will be very close to Venus on the evening of the 9th. Look west between 7:30 pm and 8 pm for these two objects. On the 16th and 17th, the moon will be passing near Jupiter and Saturn and they will be very easy to spot around 9 pm each evening.
