| THE COLONY NEWS | OCTOBER 2021 | 33 CLUB NEWS Petal Pushers Garden Club By Gloria Brosky, 714-292-8507 and Brenda Sindorf, 698-7097 At our last meeting, we had a lot of fantastic ideas we would like to implement for the rest of 2021 and into 2022! Though all are still works in progress, these are some of the budding ideas for 2021: • In October, one of our members will show us how to make a Thanksgiving turkey centerpiece using large mums, fern leaves and the like. • For November, we are looking into making a holiday wreath. • In December, we are thinking about a progressive lunch and a home tour to see some of the beautiful holiday décor. For 2022, we are planning to have the following: • Our first Home Garden Tour. This will be a nice community event. • We are lining up a florist for a flower-arranging event. • And so much more! We hope you will be able to attend our next meeting in the Annex on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 1 pm. If you wish to come and just listen, that is fine with us! Garden Tip of the month: Make a small ball from aluminum foil and run it across the blades of your cutting tools to keep them sharp. Do you have a tip you wish to share? Just email me: dancerone@verizon.net. Come and bloom with us! The Colony Cousins Genealogy Club is pleased to have Laurice Johnson as our speaker for our monthly meeting at 1 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Annex. Her presentation will be on "Crossing the Pond - Finding the Where and When of Your Ancestor's Arrival." You will learn how to find valuable immigration records and locate where your ancestor lived before "crossing the pond" (Atlantic Ocean, of course). An experienced genealogist, she has previously spoken at our meetings and was a wonderful speaker. Laurice is a very active member of the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society and is currently their Education Director. She also belongs to the TVGS Writers' Group and recently wrote in their newsletter about a story her grandmother told her about her grandmother, which I enjoyed reading. She is so fortunate to have heard this first-hand and have it recorded for her grandchildren. We start promptly at 1 pm, so please plan to arrive in time to sign in. Visitors are welcome to attend and join, if interested. For more information, contact Charlene Patterson (239-1229). Genealogy By Kathleen Brown, 698-5244 Our next meeting will take place in the Meeting Room on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 am. Our book for October is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families – the Trasks and the Hamiltons – whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. If you would like to read ahead, our November book is the delightful Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathryn Rooney. Book Readers By Patti Christiansen, 608-403-6848
