Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen. Voices whisper in the trees, "Tonight is HALLOWEEN!" Were you there? If the answer is yes, then you were one of the lucky ones at the September meeting, and you got to experience the attractive floral presentation by the owner of Beaumont Flowers, Kandy Buckley and her floral designer Lydia Nativdad. The Garden Club had a special surprise drawing for a handcrafted wooden planter created and donated by Juan Travella and his wife Marian. The winner of the drawing, Susan Clawson, was presented her prize by the generous donors. What a lovely gift and what a delightful meeting! The October meeting is in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Oct. 13 at 10 am. The guest speaker will be the owner of Cherry Valley Nursery, Donna Kniss. Can you believe the month of October is upon us as we begin the transition into autumn? Here are a few of my favorite things this month: the sky, because it can go from crystal clear to haunting as it brings with it the cooler weather. FOOTBALL… enough said! Apples and pumpkin (pumpkin spice latte yum), scary movies, fireplaces, family gatherings, apple cider and hot chocolate. (Grin) and who doesn't enjoy the smell of the central heating's first run of the season, oh that smell! Then there is apple picking, fall leaves and the most fun of all, HALLOWEEN! Now something for the flower enthusiasts… some of the cooler weather flowers for the garden; Calendula, which is probably my favorite winter flower as it's cheery and well just beautiful, as our hot summers don't allow them to grow very well in the summer months as they do in the cooler months. Who doesn't love the colorful and delicate pansies, did you know they are edible and bakers put them on cakes and cupcakes? Snap dragons, are the best if you love flowers that smell good. Nasturtiums, which by the way are very easy to grow and can also act as a trap crop for cabbage caterpillars. And for the very inventive and more daring garden designers, have you tried intermixing both vegetables and flowers in your garden? Whatever you do, get out there and dig it! "The most wonderful thing about gardeners is they are ever optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before." … ~ Vita Sackville-West For membership contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101.
