Yes, as with all the clubs, the Doo Wop & Disco Dance Club is ready to adapt to any change in the COVID restrictions. We follow the county's rules about offering any gatherings. We are keeping parties simple so even if we are not dancing at the time we can PIVOT at a moment's notice! (Are we tired yet of that word!) Our membership meeting is on Oct. 19 from 4 to 6 pm in Abravanel Hall. Our October party is planned for Abravanel Hall as well and it's on Halloween! The music will be by the popular band, Breez'n. If you are not already a member and would like to learn how to get tickets for these parties, print out the membership form on our Doo Wop website,* complete the information, and drop it by the Clubhouse front desk. Include a check for $10 per person made out to The Doo Wop Club. Our party space is too small for all the Doo Wop Club members who wish to attend so we conduct a lottery for both the reserved seat list and the waiting list. *OceanHillsCountryClub. com Log-In; click on "Social Clubs," then Doo Wop & Disco Club. Meanwhile, checkout these 1984 lyrics to Footloose by Kenny Loggins –they can apply to these times: You're playing so cool, obeying every rule Deep way down in your heart You're burning, yearning for some, somebody to tell you That life ain't passing you by I'm trying to tell you It will if you don't even try You'll get by if you'd only cut loose Footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes Ooh-wee, Marie, shake it, shake it for me Woah, Milo come on, come on let's go Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose! (Be safe so we can see you on the dance floor!) When the Dance Troupe was able to again meet for classes in the Clubhouse, we decided to start a beginner class for jazz and tap. We had eight start the class and now they have been dancing for several months. They have learned enough that they will be included in our long-delayed show which hopefully will be performed in the spring of 2022. Most of this group had limited dance experience as children, though Diane Hillman was very involved in ballet into her teen years and Joan Costello took a "moms' class" at the studio where her daughter was taught. But what is constant with this group is their love of dance. Many of the members also square, ballroom, and line dance. For most, tap is a new skill, but they love the exercise and learning the energetic steps. Almost all of the dancers said that what brought them to the troupe this year was a current member who encouraged them to try the beginner class, and they have continued because the classes are fun and good exercise, and the existing members have been welcoming. No one is concerned about how good the dancers are, or what their previous experience has been. As long as they are willing to show up for the classes and practices, they will continue to improve and will be ready to strut their stuff at our show. As the great choreographer Martha Graham said, "Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion." And, as Joan says, "Dancing is my happy place." The Dance Troupe welcomes new members whether you are new to dance or have experience. We have classes in jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dancing. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact Allison Stewart at als2art@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@cox. net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. 14 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2021 | Ocean Hills Dance Troupe Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club FOOTLOOSE! Loose!
