| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2021 | 39 Racquet Club Experiments can and do pay off! At July's meeting, acting president Ann Rike distributed index cards and pencils and asked attendees to list the names of those they believed qualified to fulfill the duties of the pickleball committee (easy sell!) and club president (harder sell). Suggestions came in that proved fruitful, resulting in Bob James being appointed Interim President and the pickleball committee being reconstituted. Bob James is the son of original owners Jess and Mary Lou James. He and Paige moved in during the shutdown to join brother Guy (and Heidi) James in supporting their WWII vet father who lost his wife in early 2020. The extended James family actively engages in OHCC sports and their friendly family rivalries when competing against each other are great fun to watch. The appointment of a new pickleball committee – Harvey Bernstein, Sue Bixler, Roxanne Dillon, Suzanne Forman, Sandy Reinhardt, and Tom Vaccaro – is a step toward getting more members involved in the everyday duties of managing the courts now that daily activities are normalizing. They began by developing the fall court schedule and proceeded to organize the first club pickleball tournament since 2019! Our well-received jungle-themed party on the Lanai, hosted by Social Chairs Laura Urban and Pele Pyle, turned out a lot of members in leopard-skin garb and safari hats. On a perfect summer evening, the ebullient crowd enjoyed barbecue, dancing and just being together under the Big Tent after so many months without celebrations. Summer pickleball lessons ended on a high note with class round- robin tournaments. Newbies and Tier 2 players got to test skills developed over the summer with several garnering "most improved" and "best team player" awards from Head Instructor Herb Livsey and his teaching staff at the culminating social. More lessons are in the works, so any resident wishing to learn pickleball should email ohrchelp@gmail.com to be added to the interest list. With the weather cooling down, pickleball and paddle tennis morning drop-ins (9 to 11 am) provide residents an alternative to play without having to arrange their own foursomes. Advanced pickleball players take the courts at the Clubhouse daily; the Pavilion Courts host Intermediates Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays and Novice / Advanced Beginners on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Paddle tennis continues Monday morning drop- ins at the HOA courts. Check the schedule posted at the courts and online for full details.
