26 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2021 | Art Lovers What a wonderful time the Art Lovers members had at the Barrio Glassworks studio at 3060 Roosevelt St. in Carlsbad. With the large overhead door opening to the street and benches on the sidewalk we were able to watch three artisans work their magic with glass. As we watched in rapt attention, owner, Mary Devlin explained each process from the initial firing of the glass rods to the final colorful glass vase. Mary noted that the art form itself dates back to the first century B.C. Blown glass is referred to as "hot glass" and special tools are used. From the 2,200 degree furnace the artists collect hot glass on a rod, blow a bubble into the glass from the opposite end of the rod and add a shape or color for a distinctive finish. They must always keep the glass hot and moving quickly. It usually takes two people working together to achieve the best results. Fused glass, or "warm glass" is done with flat sheets of glass that are cut and shaped, and then put in a glass kiln to be melted together. It can then be put in molds and fired again in the kiln to be shaped into three-dimensional items. During a trip in 2012 Mary Devlin, her husband Gary Raskin and son Drew Raskin happened upon the famous island of Murano, Italy. They were all transfixed as they watched master glassworkers at work. Drew Raskin, an emerging multi-faceted artist, fell in love with the form and it was not long before his parents did too. Back home they spent time with Seattle's glassblowers learning about the intricacy of the craft. They decided to put their passion and dreams into reality and in December of 2020 established their own studio in the historic Barrio Community of Carlsbad Village. The founders of Barrio Glassworks are eager to share this collaborative and beautiful art form with neighbors, travelers and artists in residence by creating inclusive opportunities for education, entertainment, and outreach. Programming includes community events, artist residencies, live demonstrations, instruction, studio rentals and Make-Your-Own classes. Situated behind the workshop is a gallery of beautiful and unusual glassworks for sale. We are excited to invite you to the new all male Art Studio display featuring the beautiful creations of some of our favorite artists here in Ocean Hills: Frank Boynton, Mike McCaslin, Tom Murphy, Ernie Pick, Malcolm Reinhardt, Harvey Tilker, and Gary Warmuth. Their talent is evident in their art and definitely worth your time to come enjoy. Many of them have painted in various mediums over the years; others have started painting more recently. Each artist brings his own style, and the amazing, wonderful result is a combined display of contrasts in color, subjects, texture and style. It's a must see! We, Judy Harris and Lainy Vinikow, have been featuring the work of Ocean Hills Country Club's artistic men and women residents since 2010 and look forward to continuing these special displays for years to come. We're never sure what creative surprises will come through the door on installation morning. We love meeting the artists and figuring out a layout that we find pleasing; we hope that you agree.
