Birdwatchers
Woodpeckers are fun to watch but are usually heard and not
seen. Nuttall's woodpecker measuring a length of 7.5 inches is
common to our village. Our golfers have heard them many times
but not realized what they were. Nuttall's are identified by a rattle
call, single note, or are heard pecking in a tree. They can be located
with patience and a pair of binoculars. Nuttall's range is quite
narrow, covering California from Mexico to Oregon borders.
The Downy woodpecker measures 6.75 inches in length and
is found throughout North America by comparison. They favor
riparian (wet) areas and can be found in such areas nearby Ocean
Hills. The Downy has a white patch down its back which makes it
readily distinguished from Nut-tall's. Their call is more of a squeaky
rattle. Males of both species have red at the back of the head. We
may find a downy on a bird walk to a nearby riparian area.
