"Thanksgiving dinners take 18 hours to prepare. They are consumed in 12 minutes. Half-time takes 12 minutes. This is not a coincidence." ~ Erma Bombeck What an informative meeting we had in September! Ron Duncan, the local Bee Keeper, spoke to us about bees. He has over 600 hives. He shared a tip that if you suffer from allergies, and who doesn't, eating 'local' honey will help them. You can get Ron's honey at Lithopass printing in Banning. The November meeting will be held in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Nov. 10, commencing at 10 am. On Dec. 16, 1620, the first passengers from the ship Mayflower came ashore on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, November's meeting will be all about celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower. Our President Pam Mikkelsen, is a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, so expect surprises and a very informative meeting. In the month of November, Better Homes and Gardens reminds us it is the time to plant beds with cool season flowers, such as pansies, candy tuft, Johnny Jump ups, sweet peas, sweet alyssum, and stock. They tell us a good time to divide perennials, and it's the best time to adjust your watering schedule. As the weather cools and the sun moves lower in the sky, reset your timer to water less frequently, however don't change the number of minutes your system waters each time. Remember - gardening requires water, mostly in the form of perspiration. (Grin) November is here and it's all about Thanksgiving, oh yeah and football. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and occurs on Thurs., Nov. 25. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. I try to remind myself that Thanksgiving Day is about more than just baking, cooking, and drinking wine (although wine is an important part). It's that special time when families and friends get together to share their stories and celebrate all the blessings they have received throughout the year, a day to really show appreciation for those in our lives. The Garden Club Board, during this time of Thanksgiving, turn their thoughts to those whose friendships and support mean so much to them, the members. Happy Thanksgiving from your Garden Club Board. For membership contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. Vegetable garden questions, contact Pat Pennington at (951) 314-9229, "The Garden of EAT-EM" advisor. For general information, contact President Pam Mikkelsen at (951) 797-3080. Happy gardening. ~ Raelene Kretchman Garden Club 42 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2021 | Ron Duncan, the Bee Man The Garden Club See's Candy fundraiser will be on the following days and times in the Main Clubhouse lobby: Nov. 5 and 6 in the from 9 am to 2 pm Nov. 15-20, 22-23 from 10 am to 3 pm Dec. 7, 9-11, and 13-18 from 10 am to 3 pm June Bullock, Flo Bailey, and Charlene Fink
