By Bill Connelly You might have noticed over the past few weeks a group of mature gentlemen working on the sand traps around the California Oaks Golf Course. In a recent conversation with the course manager, we discovered that he had a labor shortage and was working to add employees, but having limited success. So, a group comprised of members of the CMGC and the Good Old Boys joined forces to offer labor support to help get the course back in playable shape. Due to restrictions in the receivership, they could not perform volunteer work and needed to become employees of the golf course. A group of about a dozen Colony members signed up as employees and began working on the sand traps! Even if your ball doesn't drop into a trap on your next round, you might notice an improvement. There are also plans to bring in additional sand to help bring the bunkers back into top shape. We'll likely find more to do once the bunkers are all cleaned up. As most of you know, the golf course is an important element of our community, and this partnership with the course management is a great way to help restore the course to a more playable and attractive condition. See you on the links! Toys for Tots By Rita Nastri, 698-8640 The Colony Elf is again working with the Southwest Riverside County Marine Corps League and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve this year to provide and distribute toys to needy children. The USMC Toys for Tots Program was established in 1947 by then Major Bill Hendricks and his wife Diane. My husband and I worked very closely with them in the late 70s when we were stationed in Los Angeles and my husband was the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center there. As in the past, this effort has not only provided gifts during the holidays, but also sends a message of hope which can motivate children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. I know there are many similar programs, but to see the organization of the collection sites and fair distribution of your gifts is to know why this is a program that many have copied. As has been the protocol, a bin will be available from Nov. 15 to Dec. 10 in the Clubhouse Lobby for your unwrapped gifts for children of all ages. We missed last year because of COVID, but two years ago, through your generosity, we collected over 600 toys, and this year we would like to surpass that number. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS-recognized 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity. If any club or organization would also like to participate in this worthwhile endeavor, please contact me at 698-8640, and I can book the Elf to appear at your Holiday function to personally accept your gifts for Toys for Tots. Let's make this holiday special for as many kids as we can! COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD 12 | THE COLONY NEWS | NOVEMBER 2021 |
