By Mike Vergara, (951) 461-2889 November! It's the middle of autumn, standard time, and long, clear (hopefully!) nights. There are two substantial meteor showers left to see this year. This month it's the Leonid Meteor Shower (aka: the Leonids). The Leonids this year run from November 6 through 30, with November 17 being the peak evening. You will have to be a night-owl for this show, because the best viewing will be from around midnight until dawn. I've mentioned before that meteor showers are named for the constellation from which they appear to originate. In this case, it's Leo the Lion. Leo doesn't clear our horizon until about 1:00 am, and there is an almost-full moon that will dampen viewing as well. November's full moon is on the 19th. It was known as the Full Beaver Moon or the Full Frost Moon by Indigenous peoples because it's at this time of year when the beavers start to take shelter in their lodges for the winter. It's also the time of year when the first frosts occur. Brrr! There will also be a partial lunar eclipse the evening of the 18th - 19th. The entire eclipse is visible from Murrieta, but the peak of the eclipse is at 1:03 am. You can find a lot more information at this website: https://earthsky.org/astronomy- essentials/partial-lunar-eclipse-november-19-2021. Jupiter and Saturn are still high in the early evening. It's never a bad time to view the giants of the solar system. If you're outside on Thanksgiving, look to the southwest around 6:00 pm, as Venus, Saturn and Jupiter will be parading across the evening sky. Venus will be the brightest of the three and the closest to the horizon. Next up (moving from west to east) will be Saturn, the dimmest, followed by Jupiter. To find where these planets and constellations are, visit http://skymaps.com/index.html. From there you can print your own map of the sky for the month. Clear skies! november Sky november Sky Field of Honor Flag Assembly The Colony has always had a great turnout to assemble flags for display for Murrieta's Field of Honor in Town Square Park. This year, we will meet on Friday, Nov. 5, from 12 to 4 pm. Please feel free to join in when you can, as a few thousand flags need to be assembled. Stay for an hour, or stay for two or three No reservation is necessary. Come join us at City Hall at Town Square! It's on the right, next to the Police Station. 14 | THE COLONY NEWS | NOVEMBER 2021 | COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
