34 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021 | Garden Club As we approach the end of the year, we are looking forward to some great activities. For instance, our Nov. 10 meeting will feature one of our most popular guest speakers, David Root. David is an award-winning floral designer. He is both entertaining and knowledgeable and will amaze you with his floral designs and arrangements. All residents are welcome to join us on Nov. 10 in Abravanel Hall. Then on Nov. 13, Garden Club members will assist the Woodchucks with their annual Toy Drive/Fund Raiser for Camp Pendleton families. This event was both heart- warming and great fun last year thanks to generous OHCC residents who dropped off toys, food, and cash or gift cards. Get your donations ready and come on Nov. 13 as we help the Woodchucks brighten the holidays for our military families. Finally, our ever-popular Garden Club Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show will be back on Dec. 8. We missed being able to hold this favorite get-together in 2020. You are invited to join us as we bid farewell to 2021 at our final event of the year. Our Club has been very active these past four months, under the leadership of interim president Rich Halkyard. We have been on the trail at Encinitas Ranch, La Costa Ranch/Ridgeline trail, North Shore of Lake Hodges, along the San Clemente Beach Trail, TorreyPines State Park, Sail Bay, and Santa Margarita West/Fallbrook. We average over 20 walkers and hikers each outing. On each scheduled event, there is a shorter hike for walkers along with the longer hike. Each has a leader. Every hike is scenic, every hike highlighted by the camaraderie of the group that heads out. So many of us have made new friends, created by the common interest of walking and hiking. In November our activity will find us at the Boulder LoopTrail at Dayle Ranch on Nov. 5, and at Discovery Lake Creek in San Marcos on Nov. 12. For every hike, we meet at the overflow parking lot at 8:30 am, get organized for the day. Many in the group share rides, so transportation is never a problem. On most hikes a high light of the day is meeting after the hike at a selected restaurant. After the Torrey Pines State Park hike in mid- September, many of us congregated at the wonderful Seaside Market in Cardiff, individually ordered lunch, sat together outside, finishing a most delightful morning of exercise. On the evening of Sept. 28, our annual party was held on the lanai, catered by Red Tail, music by Music Station, a favorite band at many OHCC party gatherings. Dining, dancing, and camaraderie surrounded the evening. Members behind the scenes of this party were Darlene and Dan Fahey who chaired the event, supported by Linda Steiger, Alicia Oligar, Barbara Sabin, Gerry and Herb Livsey. Our yearly meeting was held Oct. 12, new officers were selected. This leadership team will be announced in the next issue of OHCC Living. New members are welcome on all hikes, residents and guests are welcome as well if you find you want to experience our hikes first.
