We all have much to be thankful for this month, including meeting again in the Clubhouse with others. Join us on Monday and Wednesday at 11:15 am to 12:15 pm in the Abravanel Hall for the Chair Yoga class led by our professional Instructor, Cheryl Todd. For more than a decade she has been dedicated to her work in the medical field as a front and back office medical assistant in urgent care and as a nurse assistant working mainly with seniors in their homes and in retirement communities. She discovered Yoga and was getting stronger and had a feeling of peace and wellness. She wanted to share the benefits of yoga with others so she became a Yoga teacher. She received her first yoga teacher certification in classical hatha yoga in 2001 and went on from there to specialize and became certified in gentle, chair, senior and adaptive yoga. She instructs those Seniors that participate in Chair Yoga twice a week to help people feel their best. You pay only $5 per visit and no membership fees will be charged until 2022. Just show up and join us for one hour. Try it, you'll like it! Tatis Cervantes-Aiken has another excellent class from Chair to Mat on Tuesday morning for free from 8 to 9 am in the Majorca room. She is an excellent instructor and resident of Ocean Hills. Senior Fitness Club Swim, Surf & Wellness OHCC's Swim Surf and Wellness Club gathered for our September meeting in Abravenel Hall. A new president, Robin Bleeker, and a new vice-president, Uri Redlich, were elected and introduced. Tim Pentel, surfer and lap swimmer, spoke about the "Surf "portion of our club. Contact Time at TimPentel@yahoo.com for surf updates as well as information about carpooling to great local beaches. Next, we heard from Ken Krueger, one of the club's swim instructors. Ken spoke about the free swim lessons offered by the club. Instruction is tailored to the individual and can range from a fearful beginner to a capable swimmer who wants to improve their technique. Contact Ken at k2kreger@yahoo.com for more information. Outgoing president Lynn Conde offered an update on the club's monthly blood pressure clinic. We offer a free blood pressure check on the last Friday of every month from 1 to 3 pm. This is held on Pal Court, facilitated by RNs, 100 percent confidential and open to all. Lynne then introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Stan Katz, DDS. Dr. Katz gave a very informative talk on dental health and how it relates to heart health, especially in the OHCC age group. Dr. Katz is also a published author and donated two books to the evening's raffle. The club wants to issue a huge THANK YOU to outgoing President Lynn Conde as well as outgoing vice-president Kory Ward. These two women devoted many hours over the past several years to improving the Swim, Surf, & Wellness Club. They represented the club at multiple meetings concerning pool use and rules, always advocating for equitable access for everyone. Lynne and Kory were also the driving force behind expanding advocating for equitable access for everyone. Lynne and Kory were also the driving force behind expanding "Wellness" to both our club's title and our focus. Thank you, Lynne and Kory, for your tireless dedication! For information about the aqua fitness classes, contact Leesa Singer at aqualeesa@gmail.com. Member Spotlight: This month the club spotlights our new president, Robin Bleeker. Robin began her love of the pool at an early age. She was on her local swim team from the age of eight until she was 15, concentrating on the crawl and butterfly strokes. A native of New Jersey, Robin and her partner of 20 years, Van Rhonheimer, changed coasts and moved to OHCC about four years ago. They have six children between them and came to So Cal to be closer to their two grandchildren who live in the Los Angeles area. Robin is a retired physical therapist and has a master's degree in neuropsychology, which is the study of movement. Robin is excited to get to know more Swim, Surf, & Wellness members and has lots of ideas for our club. Congratulations, Robin! Our next club meeting will be Mon., Nov. 18, from 6:30 to 8 pm. Interested in joining our Swim, Surf & Wellness club? For more info, contact Nel Stingley at nelstingley@gmail.com. New President, Robin Bleeker
