I've mentioned in several previous articles that our community is participating in an Ocean Hills neighborhood Wildfire Evacuation Study sponsored by the Oceanside Fire Department. The draft study has recently been completed and submitted to OHCC (Wendy and myself ) for review and comment. The study consists of 113 pages of tables, graphs, statistical analyses, opinions, evaluations, conclusions, references to other studies, and so on. In preparing this article I've read, re-read, and triple read the study and I can tell you that I now know more about nothing than I ever have. The good news is the key finding that concludes the available roadway supply (evacuation routes and roadway network) is more than sufficient to service the evacuation demand (number of evacuating vehicles) within the neighborhoods in a timely fashion. The "this should be addressed" news is the finding that the traffic egress from our community is constrained at both exit points. The front gate exit intersection onto Cannon Rd. is shared by the Church, Senior Living Center, and at least one neighborhood. The back gate exit is hindered by cross-traffic on Shadowridge Drive. The following diagrams show the projected traffic congestion 30 minutes and 90 minutes after the Advisory to Evacuate. The study is scheduled to be discussed with representatives of all Ocean Hills neighborhoods and finalized in early October. Once finalized, the next step will be the development of an Emergency Evacuation Plan, based on the results of the study. Stay tuned for more information! Please keep in mind that this study and resulting plan is for emergency preparedness only – nothing has been presented to OHCC by any fire authority to indicate we are in danger from a wildfire. In other news – the SERT Club donation drive which began on Aug. 1 is moving along. As of the end of September, donations have reached $7,000, including $2,000 from the SERT Club driveway sale. Thanks to the members of the SERT Club Neighbor Helping Neighbor Team who arranged and coordinated this effort. The SERT Club has received donations ranging from $10 to $1,000, and every dollar will be reinvested into the community in the form of emergency response preparedness and response supplies and services. The goal is $16,320 ($10 for every household). Donation checks can be dropped off at the Clubhouse (in the SERT envelope) or left in your tube for pickup by sending an email to ohccsert@gmail.com. And finally – Thank you to the Neighbor Helping Neighbor Team for supporting the recent COVID Booster/Flu Shot Drive-Through Clinic. Remember - SERT is more than a Social Club – it's also a Service Club!! | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021 | 5 By President John Slayton, SERT President
