28 | LIFE IN SOLERA | NOVEMBER 2021 | CLUBS & GROUPS Getting Started Past articles have addressed information geared toward those individuals already working on their family tree. However, I realized there are a great many of you who would like to start your family tree, but are not sure what to do and how to do it. Here are some things you need to do to get your tree started: First, write down the complete names, birth dates, marriage dates, and death deaths for any relatives that are currently alive. Hopefully, you can get back to your great-grandparents names and information by talking to grandparents or family members as you collect the information. Next, you should find some sort of family tree program that you can populate with the information you have already accumulated. This will also show you what information you need to add and the people that are missing. There are many sources for these "blank" trees, some are free, such as at Familysearch.com and many are part of subscription services for genealogy information and data bases, such as, Family Tree Maker.com or Ancestry.com. You will have to decide if you want to include pictures with any given member on your tree. Many of the tree sources mentioned above have the capability to include pictures. Some additional information you may want to collect as you collect family members and relatives are a person's occupation, any interesting stories about an individual, or significant milestones or achievements the individual may have in their life. Many of these tree programs have "notes" sections where this information can be added. Of course, the Solera Genealogy Group can help you with getting started, finding your family's history, building your family tree, or finding solutions to problems you may encounter, whether they are for a births, marriages, or deaths. See our points of contact in this Life in Solera magazine for help. ~ Bill Cramsie Mike Ryan's talk on the life of General Custer, Part 2, was riveting. We learned of the early 1870s gathering of "storm clouds" of the Plains Indians v Settlers/Miners clash. The good news is that Mike did not finish his talk so Part 3, the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, will be given at the Nov. 1 meeting, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Clubhouse. Come and listen to find out the outcome. ~ Richard Crowe ANCESTRY GROUP HISTORY GROUP
