By Dick Roppé, Resident It was 5 o'clock, the morning of 11 November 1918, when Germany, lacking manpower and supplies and facing imminent invasion, formally signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. In order for all combatants to get the word, fighting would cease six hours later at 11 am. Thus, the Great War ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Terms of peace were negotiated and On June 28, 1919, Germany and the Allied Nations (including Britain, France, Italy and Russia) signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the war. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution, becoming a national holiday in 1938. It wasn't until 1954 that President Dwight Eisenhower signed a resolution changing Armistice Day to Veteran's Day to honor all Veterans. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, moving the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October to give workers a long weekend with a Monday holiday. But in 1978 it was returned to November 11where it remains today. Here are some interesting (perhaps outdated) Veterans' facts: • 18.2 million living Veterans served during at least one war as of 2018. • 9 percent of Veterans are women. • Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 325,000 were still alive as of 2020. • As of 2019, the top three states with the highest percentage of Veterans were Virginia, Wyoming, and Alaska.
