42 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2021 Our Book Club selection for Dec. 14 is The Lost and Found Bookshop by Susan Wiggs. Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "In the wake of a shocking tragedy, Natalie Harper inherits her mother's charming but financially strapped bookshop in San Francisco. She also becomes caretaker for her ailing grandfather Andrew, her only living relative — not counting her scoundrel father. But the gruff, deeply kind Andrew has begun displaying signs of decline. Natalie thinks it's best to move him to an assisted living facility to ensure the care he needs. To pay for it, she plans to close the bookstore and sell the derelict but valuable building on historic Perdita Street, which is in need of constant fixing. There's only one problem–Grandpa Andrew owns the building and refuses to sell. Natalie adores her grandfather; she'll do whatever it takes to make his final years happy. Besides, she loves the store and its books provide welcome solace for her overwhelming grief. After she moves into the small studio apartment above the shop, Natalie carries out her grandfather's request and hires contractor Peach Gallagher to do the necessary and ongoing repairs. His young daughter, Dorothy, also becomes a regular at the store, and she and Natalie begin reading together while Peach works. To Natalie's surprise, her sorrow begins to dissipate as her life becomes an unexpected journey of new connections, discoveries and revelations, from unearthing artifacts hidden in the bookshop's walls, to discovering the truth about her family, her future, and her own heart." Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am in the RCN Activity Room #3, and someone volunteers to lead the discussion about the book we have chosen for the month. General Washington surprised the Hessian troops by crossing the Delaware River and surprising them on Christmas Day. Japanese forces surprised America by bombing the ships in Pearl Harbor when our country was not at war. But for many, many veterans it was when loneliness captured their emotions. During their tours whether overseas or in the United States troops were away from loved ones. The camaraderie of fellow service members could not replace separation from loved ones. Over the years many holiday seasons would blend together, but the veteran's Christmas's would always stand out. Letters and packages sent in November would arrive sometime in December or January to remind the deployed what they were missing. Photographs, crumbled cookies and "SWAKs" or letters were cherished and shared. For the lucky entertainment from a USO show with Bob Hope. The signs are of Bing Crosby's White Christmas - always requested and always played. Flags for this month are reminders of life at home and then life overseas. What it was like trying to fill the void with a missing family member and what it must be like back home. ~ Len Tavernetti, ltavernetti@hotmail.com We hope to have a location approved soon and are working on our budget to make it a great addition to our community. Although still in progress, a steering committee is now meeting regularly and we welcome Martha Tureen as the president. Martha is a master gardener for Riverside County and we have several other master gardeners who have joined the group. If you are interested and have not yet signed up, please email Pat Wayne at pwayne1@outlook.com. ~ Pat Wayne Community Garden Club
