Inhale deeply and fill your soul with wintry night. -John Greddle December has arrived with the promise of all the wonders of the holidays. We are reminded of past holidays filled with family, laughter and yes, even snow! How I remember sleepless nights When we would read by candlelight And on the windowpane outside A new world made of snow. A million feathers falling down, A million stars that touch the ground So many secrets to be found Amid the falling snow- Enya Although we do not experience snow except in our memories, we are blessed with the Pacific Ocean with its crashing waves as it deposits its treasures upon the shore. It is the great equalizer of the soul. Among those treasures was a dog named Bhante, a Corgi, who resided in Oceanside for over seven years. He had become a favorite friend among beach goers, lifting spirits everywhere he went. He could sense if someone was not well and would gravitate to them. If people looked stressed and petted him, they would leave with a smile. He visited nursing homes, libraries, and even the City Council meetings. Wherever he went, he shared his kindness. He was a local hero of Oceanside. When folks saw him, they would shout "It's the Corgi!" Deborah Burggraaf, a friend of the dog's owner, decided to write a book about him, BHANTE, The Corgi of O'side. The work received two International Book Awards and Bronze Medals from the Authors and Publishers Association in Children's Literature. Bhante died of cancer in March of last year. He was 16 years old. His owner said he was caring to the end. His story will enrich your day with his wonder and zest for life. The book can be found in our library on the shelf of Local Authors. Don't miss a chance to read it and share it with your grandchildren and family. The photography is beautiful. The book is truly a holiday gift with its message of kindness.
