34 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2021 | Garden Club What a year this was! Reflecting on 2021, in spite of the limits of the Pandemic, the Garden Club enjoyed some wonderful programs and activities. For instance, we learned from master gardeners and specialists on topics like Bonsai trees, native bees of California, vegetable container gardens, floral designs and holiday decorations. We had our first-ever virtual Ocean Hills Garden Tour, and we helped brighten the holidays for Marine families by helping the Woodchucks at a drive-through donation event. Our plant sale at the Community Flea Market was another great success and those funds will be used to enhance our beautiful community. It was a busy year indeed. Our last activity of the year is this month — the Annual Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show on Dec. 8. This event has always been one of the highlights of the year and we look forward to gathering together for this favorite and final event of the year. AND 2022 will be even better! We invite new and old members to join the Garden Club at Do Dues Day on Jan. 8 — or any time this month by dropping your check for $10 at the Front Desk. We are looking forward to a year of interesting and educational programs on various garden related topics. In spite of the slow start of 2021, it has been a good year and we are ready to enjoy more great speakers and activities in the coming months. Happy holidays to all and good wishes for a wonderful New Year from the Ocean Hills Garden Club. At our Oct. 12 meeting, a new slate of officers for 2022 was proposed, and accepted unanimously. Added to the 2022 Board were four Officer-at-Large positions, to be made up of committed members who would volunteer for committee work, aid on Do Dues Day, and support the Board members in tasks where needed. The 2022 Board is as follows: Rich Halkyard — President Herb Livsey — Vice President Gerry Livsey — Secretary Lori Smith — Treasurer Officers-at-Large: Lori Erickson, Darlene Fahey, Fran Goldstein, and Ron Lyon In early November, good turnouts resulted for two hikes: the Boulder Loop Trail at Daley Ranch in Escondido on Nov. 5; and Discovery Lake Creek in San Marcos on Nov. 12. On each scheduled event, there is a shorter hike for walkers, and a longer hike designed for those who want more distance, or more of a challenge. Both hike sections have a leader, the leader aware of every member of his or her group. We carry on safely, concerned for each other; and all of us experience the camaraderie that hiking creates—new friends with a common interest. Our Club has a Hike Planning Committee, members meet to plan hikes for the year. For this year that Committee has five members: Barb Sabin, Lori Smith, Larry Ward, Ron Lyon, and Bill Nupp. All committee members are open to suggestions for hikes by anyone in the membership. Periodically, the hikers and walkers take part in a "getaway" hike, overnight stays elsewhere, a distance from OHCC. In the planning stages for this year is a trip to Asilomar Beach for three nights, staying at the Asilomar Hotel and Conference Center on the Monterey Peninsula. Proposed are two coastal hikes, then inland to Pinnacles National Park. Working in this event are the leaders who are designing it, Natalie Sentz and Don Dudley, experienced hikers with experienced leadership. Already there has been a show of interest to take part in this hiking adventure. Because we have newer residents interested in the Club, but who may still be working, Rich Halkyard has developed Saturday scouting hikes for those members who need a weekend date to hike. New members are welcome on all hikes, residents and guests as well if anyone wants to experience our hikes first.
