| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2021 | 39 Racquet Club There were 18 paddle-tennis players who showed up for an early fall drop-in to find three new rules for play: F-U-N was the order of the day as Lois and Jack Green employed the paddle saddle to good effect to ensure no foursomes were ever the same. When play concluded, the fun moved down to the HOA patio for a tasty lunch arranged by Dannica Wood and Tim Griffin. Felicity Swerdlow, who had decked out the area with white tablecloths and flowers, served up mimosas to the appreciative players. After a two-year COVID hiatus, competition pickleball returned to OHCC with an exciting mixed doubles tournament exquisitely managed by Bin and John Crow. The new Pavilion Courts were the perfect stage for the final games with scores of players and other residents lining the patio and walkway and seated on the adjacent courts to cheer on the contestants. Winners of the morning Advanced Bracket were David Levine and Pam Stern. Afternoon Advanced Bracket winners were Jack and Lois Green. When David and Pam were unable to participate in the playoff, second- place finishers in the morning bracket (Larry See and Felicity Swerdlow) stepped in and won an exciting playoff match 15-7. Congratulations to Felicity and Larry! Winners of the morning Intermediate Bracket were Darlene and Dan Fahey. Afternoon Intermediate Bracket winners were June Chang and Van Rhonheimer. Dan and Darlene prevailed in the play-off game 15-11. Congratulations to the Faheys! A Palm Court pizza social capped the event with a lively crowd celebrating the day's play. Door prizes added to the fun with Monday pop-up food vendors Chez Christophe and Bella Buzzo contributing gift certificates, along with Peking Wok in Bonsall. An Introduction to Pickleball class, exclusively for players new to pickleball, will be offered starting Jan. 15. The six-session class taught by Mike Hoggatt will take place Saturday mornings at the Pavilion Courts. Details are posted on the club website or by contacting ohrchelp@gmail. com. Advance registration required. The class is free and open to any OHCC resident. Want to give pickleball a try but need a paddle or have family visiting and need extra paddles?
